With a little care and patience, it works great. Just as advertised.
The plastic cover of my shop vac fell off my work bench and the one clip broke off. I attempted to glue it back on a couple different times with different glues that claimed to work on plastic, but it didn't work. So I got this kit and clamped the pieces together so I could work over the crack. After cutting the mesh to fit I placed in on the underside of the pieces and heated it until the mesh worked into the plastic. Then I covered the mesh with melted plastic from the plastic strips in the kit. Smoothed the plastic with the iron. Then I could work on the other side using the same processes. It was easy and did a great job.

cheaply constructed JUNK!
Used this for first time and realized as I handled it, it would not last. First, it has a loose wide ring around the steel shaft near the handle, some sort of heat shield washer? It keeps moving up and down all the way to the handle (steel shaft meets the handle) and stops 1" further up the opposite way into the iron rod. ..... an annoying feature! The back of handle where power cord leads into it , the plastic cap comes off easily! I threaded (hand tight) the provided brass bit tip into the shaft and plugged it in, the little red light on the handle came on. I then decided to removed the tip, to use a different one , it became extremely hard to remove, it finally unthreaded. When I screwed the same into the rod (this being the second time, it was warm ) to see why it was so hard to remove it, it became just as difficult to screw it back in. I did not cross thread! Anyway, it slowly inserted barely 1/4" , the inside threaded jacket must have broken loose and the entire bit slid down the main rod! I was able to remove the bit but the unit stopped working even with the handle light on. Obviously the wires inside must have twisted and broke off. I received a full refund ...... the reviews were favorable but this welder turned out to be a real cheap piece of junk! it basically fell apart! I never got to use it once!

Tip broke off at the screw
I used it on 2 of my kayaks. It took a longtime to heat up and had to rest often to let heat back up. Right before a finished, the tip broke off at the screw (inside) so that I could not remove and replace the tip. Now it is in the trash. It would probably be an okay purchase if you only ever use it for very small projects.

Great purchase at a great price.
Worked perfectly in conjunction with the other items for plastic welding ordered at the same time. Wish I had bought one earlier for other tasks

Do not buy
Thought the expensive one will better. Same. Just used 2 minutes. Than broken. So so bad quality.

Hot things are hot and plastic fumes make me feel funny
This came in really handy for my car bumper repairs. Instead of paying upwards of a couple grand out of pocket to bring it into the shop to get fixed, I opted to repair the damaged plastic bumper myself. I had 0 idea what I was doing. Using some YouTube videos and with some additional tools like a heat gun, a plastic stapler, a dremel, sandpaper, body filler & matching paint I was able to bring my bumper back to one piece and to a like new condition. My newly repaired bumper looks so good now, that it makes the rest of the car look a bit old...Important notes: Plug it in, give it ~5 mins to heat up, use it for 5-10 mins and then unplug it. Use some pliers to remove the tip while it's hot and let both parts cool down separately. Let everything cool down for 15+ mins before using it again. Do not repeatedly use it on and off in short successions, "playing" with the heat will cause the copper tip to warp where it connects to the tool if you don't remove it after use and let them cool down separately (if it does warp, you can still use it, it just looks funny). The tool doesn't move exactly like a hot knife on butter so you'll have to get a feel for how to manipulate the heat to smear the plastic but it's pretty easy to figure out. Be wary of the instinct to get a better grip on it, every metal part of this gets very hot and will burn you in a split second - trust me :P
