A fascinating glimpse of life in Donegal in a bygone era.
Dungloe being my birthplace, I loved this book. I grew up in the nearby village of Burtonport, went to high school in Dungloe, during the sixties and early seventies - a time frame during which much had changed since the time described in the book, but there was still a lot that resonated with my own experience.

Growing up in a rural backwater...
Really interesting stories about life in Dungloe and people's behaviour at the time, which would seem strange by modern standards. Such as the mutual suspicions between local Catholics and Protestants.. also the revelation that running your own business is very hard work indeed, as he described how his father worked first in America to get money to buy a business at home and then to build it up....in the days before tourism ..fascinating insights into a place many dream about living in, although would the modern city dweller really survive in a rural backwater for any length of time...the reality behind the romance of the wild Atlantic way!

The book is a beautiful insight to the people and places in the town ...
The book is a beautiful insight to the people and places in the town of Dungloe. After reading the book I have a deeper understanding of the people of Donegal. Mr. Campbell is a great story teller. I enjoyed his book so much, I am now reading another of his books, The Molly Maguire Story.
