I'm not sure, I'm not much of a gardener. I used it for my chicken nests. They last a long time even the pieces that fell outside.

Could this be used as a planter-pot liner to prevent winter freezing of the plant roots?

I don't know. I used it to line a plastic outdoor plant/flower hanging flap on my deck. Filled the line with dirt and flowers and it works perfectly.
