Perfect little movie about life being complicated
Great look at the trials and tribulations of a college woman who is still treated like a little girl by her parents. The main conflict is that she inadvertently finds out she is the other woman in a secret relationship. It's suddenly poised to blow up in the most embarrassing way possible while her whole family watches. Plus her ex is there to remind everyone what a successful person her age looks like. The movie is perfectly written and cast. If you have any interest in social dynamics, you will love this movie.

Coming of Age story Jewish college girl , cringe humor
Shiva baby is a coming of age story of a Jewish college girl, trying to foist her way to independence. Like a new driver who jerks the car first too far left and too far right, she self-exploits her sexuality, trying to find the middle road. Experimenting with the performing arts in college, she continues the acting game a bit too far in her real life, creating scenarios of cringe humor. It's implied she through her extreme experimenting, she is finding the boundaries she needs for herself to become independent in a more healthy way.Lots of humor, and farce, making fun of the cliche' of the hovering, overinvolved, indiscrete Jewish parents.

She has too many problems
She is caught in a culture where image and accomplishment are very important. But she has no direction and her mother - is a huge part of the problem. The mothering is confining. The over mothering, well meaning as it might be, and the mother's good intentions are really in doubt because the mother defines her relationship with her daughter through it.The director suggests that she will have peace and support from her gay friend. But if she does not tell the truth about who she is and find something she can pursue with passion, she is not going to be happy regardless of whether she is gay straight or bi. Her situation is partly her mother's (and her father's) fault, but she is an adult now. Telling the truth and boundaries with her parents are going to serve her way better than whatever relationship is currently (temporarily) in.So the message is misguided. However, the script and the acting are so true that the movie is wonderful. Possibly as good a situation comedy / family angst movie as we will see in a few years. I my humble opinion.

Watch this more than once!
An amazingly emotional and sensitive comedic study of the inter-generational anxiety around the issue of fluid sexual identity set at the intersection of religious claustrophobia and familial expectations. The tautly edited, claustrophobia inducing camera work is overlaid with a tension enhancing musical score that reaches an unexpected crescendo.Deserves to be watched more than once to fully appreciate the brilliant acting so ably directed. Hard to believe this was the feature directorial debut for writer/director Emma Seligman.5 stars.

Perfect dark comedy!
Funny, sexy, and smart, with a script that grows more uncomfortable (in a good way) by the moment. A perfect little (love that's it's 78 minutes in a time when too many director seem to think comedies should run 2 hours) black comedy, with a star-making performance from Rachel Sennott. The film, the performances feel real. Like sneaking a look at one mostly horrible day in someone's diary. Can't wait to see what both she and director Seligman do next.

Very Bad Movie
The movie is very depressing but that could be due to the very poor script and lack of character development. However the characters were developed enough to be very irritating. In other words, I could care less what happened to them. The movie revolves around a college age women who sleeps with men to make money (i.e., definition of a hooker) and she ends up meeting one of those men while the family is sitting shiva after a funeral. There is no resolution of conflicts and the subject of the move could have been condensed into a 10 minute short film but even that might be too long to cover this story. I should have known not to rent a move that does not have a ‘trailer’. It was a waste of $6.99.

We Are All Danielle
Literally, amazing. Every obstacle hits like a thumping beat. You can totally feel someone's heart race slowly in the span of an hour until you realize it's your own heart. The performances are impeccable, the script is tight as hell, it's a movie I'll be rewatching multiple times. This is such a perfect debut film. Emma Seligman is a force to be reckoned with and so is Rachel Sennott. I'm so so happy this was made. Favorite movie of 2021 so far.

A decent, well made movie but not especially memorable.
This film was high up on a lot of 'end of year/best of the year' type lists so was very much looking forward to seeing it. I think it was well acted and the atmosphere of a slightly stressful, overcrowded family event was well put together but there was no real ending and no real surprises at any point.I also think the relatively short run-time counted against it in this instance - some of the characters actions and reactions were unrealistic. For example (no-spoiler) when one character runs in to another character with whom they are having an illicit affair, neither one makes any effort to lie or cover up the situation. It becomes immediately obvious that something is happening due to their unrealistic reactions. An opportunity for tension/suspense was completely passed over in favour of getting to the end more quickly, presumably due to the limited budget. It was a good film anyway but definitely not worth adding to a DVD collection, this is a Netflix 'watch it once and forget about it' type film.
