There is conflicting informaton in the answers...does the unit serve the bottom three of its outlets via the bottom wall plug independently ?

The answers given are mostly right, but there is confusion. However, I have pictures of this model (GE # 54947), AND I ohm'ed it out. (If I can't post here, I will follow up with a Review where I know you can post pictures.) For the GE model I noted, there are 6 metal prongs on the back side. Each has a Hot, a Neutral, and a Ground. Each set of 3 is INDEPENDENT of the other. If you had a standard duplex receptacle that, say, was wired with one of the outlets ON, and the other SWITCHED, then that pattern would be reflected on the front of the Adapter. One bank of 3 would be on, and the other bank of 3 would be switched. I verified this by ohmmeter.

Will this plug into a 2 prong outlet ?

No, as this device is designed to cover existing grounded duplexes only. You can only use this device with a three-prong outlet.

How man amps is this unit rated for 15 or 20?

A plug or receptacle of this type is 15 Amps max. A 20 Amp plug or receptacle has one of the blade contacts turned 90 degrees (perpendicular to the other) and will not plug into this, as the blade contacts are parallel.

Is that long screw at center of the plate necessary or can that screw be removed?

You can remove the screw, but it's what holds the whole unit in place securely. It will stay plugged, but with the screw it holds it in place in the wall. You just remove the current switchplate and put this on in place of it.
