This is a handy little quick reference of landing craft types of WWII. It is all line drawings.

Merely a Reprint of an Earlier Text
As other reviewers have already mentioned this is a modern printing of a wartime (WW II) document from the Office of Naval Intelligence for recognizing US and British vessels involved in amphibious operations. It also contains some pertinent information and data on a few of the characteristics of these vessels. I purchased this to see if it offered anything in addition to the text published in 1985 by Naval Institute Press: "Allied Landing Craft of World War II." To my disappointment, it turned out to be no more than a reprint of this earlier book. Both are just reprints of the wartime recognition guide: ONI 226. The only difference that I can see is that the early version was in hardback and slightly larger (9 3/4" X 6 3/4"). This makes the small photos and text in the older version a bit easier to see and read, though making out details in the photos would still be challenging in both versions as neither text is in a large enough format to allow for clear photo details. Where photos are offered there are always more than one per page, often several together or accompanied by tiny technical drawings of the vessels. The pages are just too small for this format to work well. You get a general idea of what the vessels looked like but that's about all you get. There are other references out there with far more detail about specific vessels such as the LCVP Higgins boats and LVT Amtracs. But if this was your only reference it isn't a terrible beginning as it does contain a wide variety of Allied landing craft. So if you already own the earlier text you won't need to buy this one. And I would even say that if you can find a copy of the early version by Naval Institute Press for a reasonable price, that would be preferable to this edition because of the increase in size and hardback format. The older one will be more durable.

A Reference to WW2 landing craft and ships
The book size is quite small and the drawings and photographs lack the sharpness capable with a larger format. The book lists both allied as well as US landing craft and ships design marks and includes the LST's converted for other uses. The book is a handy reference for those with an interest in naval history.

A good reference book during that time.

Reproduction of a WW2 recognition guide
Reproduction of a WW2 recognition guide on various types of rafts, boats and ships used for amphibious landings by the Allies. As it is a recognition guide, there is no discussion about the various vessels other than size, capacity, engines, armaments etc.My copy had a few pages omitted: vessels listed in the ToC weren't there. The print is also small; at leats for my 66 year-old eyes.
