What does one hand push button operation mean? Can the lid stay open, or do you have to press it open every time you want to sip?

You do not have to press it every time you want to sip. In fact you can leave it open and your beverage still stays hots. I usually close it if I leave it in my car for a couple hours and still have some left just to keep it sealed up. Additonally, I can tell you that to create that vacuum the lid has to be a little complicated. If you drink black coffee you're fine not to have to deep clean it. I put milk in my coffee which can sour if the lid is not thoroughly cleaned. But, what I do to keep from having to constantly take the lid apart is take some hot soapy water, put it in the mug, close the lid put press button to release the liquid. Then, I pour it through the lid just like when I'm drinking it. I follow up with plain hot water and repeat those steps. It keeps it fresh for a long time without me having to take the lid apart. You just need to do it that same day so nothing drys out in there and it rinses straight through. If I can help you any further let me know!

is the handle sturdy.

The handle is very sturdy. Also, just an FYI - it keeps things hot/cold much longer than advertised. I've had things still be very warm after 12 hours. I like it.

I seem to remember it having labels when I got it that said it was made in the U.S. and on some of the websites that sell this product it is listed as "made in the USA and imported", but I couldn't find any thing definitive on the Thermos website.

Is its interior made of stainless steel?

No it is not. Try to use a magnet on it. It is aluminum.
