Q: will these hold open and stay from 40 to 60 degrees, or any angle between 0 and their fully extended length?

I am not sure... I do know the struts will try to extend to their maximum lift so I would think they wouldn't stay put at a given position. They are not that expensive so worth a try. I used them for our high school robotics team to assist in lifting an arm.

Q: What is the nut and thread size for the nut that screws on each and of the strut to secure it in the provided brackets?

Mine are not 5/16, but rather the closest metric size

Q: I have a 90 lb trap door in a floor. Will two of these keep it from slamming shut and lock in place at over 90 degrees?

I cannot give you a precise answer, since I have used them for a different application. However, the two struts allow me to raise a heavy plunge router mounted to a heavy table top (24" X 36") using fingertip pressure and remain open at an angle greater than ninety degrees. The size and weight of your trap door may give you different results, of course.
