What is the ceiling clearance ?

It's a bit over 6ft.but you'd need at least 9 for safe use.this is very pretty to watch not as good for heat.but I bought it for the entertainment/warmth primarily

Yes but it will depend on the ceiling materials and the clearance between the top of the heater cap and the patio ceiling

thinking of buying 4 of them however just read the review and it says last years model is that true also does it throw of a lot of heat?

The ones we have do not throw off a lot of heat. They are nice for the long flame that lights up dining areas, but for heat, I would go with a different style.

can it be placed on wooden deck?

Yes, but be cautious....if you're buying it as a heater versus an ornamental piece, you should consider other options. The amount of heat the unit puts off is very unimpressive.
