How strong is the magnetic hold ? If held vertically, can it hold parts in place ?

Yes, this magnetic mat holds magnetic parts perfectly. But some devices use anti-magnetic screws and this mat won't hold them. Anti-magnetic screws are used in hard drives and on logic boards of some devices.
