The magnets are not strong enough to reliably keep the earbuds together during physical activities. Doing so, you would risk them slipping off from around your neck and losing them. I couldn't measure the cable length accurately but I would estimate it to be about 2ft long or 0.7m, which is long enough to go around my neck and sit comfortably midpoint on my chest. Mine came with a simple cable adjuster in case you wanted to shorten the cable
