The Nidderdale Murders (A Yorkshire Murder Mystery Book 5)

The Nidderdale Murders
I enjoyed this book, which I both read and listened to. The setting is a remote village in Yorkshire, where DCI Oldroyd and his team go to work solving the murder of a prominent land owner, who happened to be a retired judge. Things don’t add up, then suddenly there’s another crime. The plot thickens without a real suspect in sight. As usual, Oldroyd’s intellect and persistence advance the story, at a leisurely pace in this book but with the interesting twists and turns that I’ve come to expect from J. R. Ellis. The natural beauty of the Yorkshire countryside figures prominently in this novel, adding another enjoyable element to the story. Michael Page was an excellent narrator. Though I don’t know whether his Yorkshire accent was authentic, it seemed perfect to me, and he brought the various characters to life. I really enjoy J. R. Ellis’s writing style and this interesting police procedural series.

Pontificating at conclusion boring.
The story was good. I still like the characters except they pontificate way too much and way too long after the conclusion of the story. This adds nothing to the story. It may develop the characters but I skipped it anyway.

Good Job!!
The author continues to present intriguing and puzzling mysteries. I'm doing so, he does not sacrifice his love of context. Over the series, he seems to have focused well and tightened up his environments. I will enjoy seeing what he does in the next entry to avoid becoming formulaic!

Great series!
I've read each book in this series. What I've discovered is that even though I enjoy the plot, characters, & unpredictability the best part became the author's love of his corner of England. He included so many noteworthy sights that I found myself researching right along side the story. It was wonderful to see the beauty of a particular Gorge, the background story of Betty's Tea Shops, or what a English cave spider looks like. This story, just like an Austen or Herriot book, makes you want to visit the area. Luckily I had the opportunity to live in East Anglia for 5 years, and these wonderfully descriptive books bring back many memories. I highly recommend this series!

A good story, mystery...
This is a good mystery and the resolution is predictable, but still has a few twists. This is a 5 star worthy writing only if author stayed away from unnecessary distractions in the form of all the personal relationships of the police officers which have no bearing to the main plot. They slow down the tempo and the reader has no choice but to turn the pages.

Fascinating storyline
This was a captivating story and a really interesting puzzle. You sort of get hints on what could have happened but the ending does take your breath away.

Odd mystery in a beautiful country!
I was looking into a new mystery, and found this to be fairly good. I definitely liked reading about the moors or Yorkshire, especially since my own family comes from that area of England. Since this was obviously a book written farther along in the series, I think I need to go back and read the earlier books mainly for more information about the characters. The plot was very convoluted...two women see two different men killed, at different times, but both of the murders were done by people in town. And then neither of the two men who supposedly killed cannot be found. Fun story...

More Murder in Yorkshire
The is another engaging read in Ellis’ detective series. I absolutely love the descriptions of the Yorkshire Dales area. Makes me want to move to the Dales. The plot was very engaging and Oldroyd’s character continues to be developed it the 5th book in the series. Spoiler alert!!! I found it a little disappointing that the police force fails to use any of the current investigative techniques — like finger prints — to determine the identities of the various suspects. Not very realistic, especially given how smart the detectives are written being. Al in all a very entertaining page turner.

Nidderdale murders!
Another great read with twists and turns to keep you thinking and guessing until the end. Oldroyd is a great character as are his Sargents Andy and Steph. I look forward to the next book!

As absorbing as the countryside
As a former resident of the Dales, I really enjoy these books. The details of the murders often take second place to the description of the countryside which are often so lyrical.
