The Private Eyes

It is a clean decent movie.
I like this movie because it's a good one for all ages. No cussing or nudity. It is also funny. What one would expect from a Tim Conway and Don Knott's movie.

Never looked better!
(Note: This review is specifically for the 2010 Blu-ray release)As with most fans of this film, I watched "The Private Eyes" on home video and cable in the early 80's. My sisters and I couldn't get enough of it, and to this day our conversations are peppered with quotes from the movie ("Neers! Neers!") I remember all of Tim Conway's throw-away one-liners, the spooky man in black, and the frightening opening of the sarcophagus. Now with kids of my own, I was pleasantly surprised to see a 2010 release of "The Private Eyes" on Blu-ray. It's been a while since I spent $30 on a single movie on home video, but with Halloween approaching, I was curious to see how the movie held up, and if my kids would enjoy it. Having spent a few weeks with the disc, I can say it was worth every penny.First, let me address the quality of the disc itself. As a low-budget, independent film from the early 1980's, I didn't have high expectations for the video quality, which only made the excellent video quality of this release that much more enjoyable. I don't know who did the video work on this title, but they deserve credit for an excellent job. From start to finish, this is one of the best transfers I've seen of any film on Blu-ray, including major studio releases (and I have viewed over 400 Blu-rays!) The image is extremely crisp and detailed, but with no visible enhancement or processing; it is very film-like. I suspect the image quality surpasses what was seen even on opening night in movie theaters (considering the sorry state of movie exhibition back in 1980).My only quibble with the video would be the day-for-night scenes where a scene is shot during the day, but then processed to be darker as if it were night, such as the opening sequence car-crash into the lagoon. These scenes seemed to be a little too bright (thus almost appearing as if it were daytime). Previous video releases may have been a little darker, but it's hard to compare a Blu-ray release to a memory of an old VHS. There are also a few screens with a faint vertical scratch in the frame. But other than that, I give this Blu-ray high marks for video quality. The audio quality is fine. The extras are good. An audio commentary with Tim Conway and director Lang Elliott is informative about the writing and filming of the film, with a good amount of humor (as you would expect from Tim Conway!). It's definitely worth a listen to. There's also a photo gallery of behind-the-scenes shots. And the trailer. What more could you ask for (other than for the commentary to have been recorded at a time when Don Knotts could also have participated)?Oh, and how did my kids like it? Thumbs up! They're ages 13, 11 and 6, and even the 13yo jumped at the sarcophagus scene, and laughed at more than a few of the jokes. When it was over, the 6yo said "Oh, I wish there was another one!" And the plot still doesn't really make any sense, but it's a fun journey anyhow.Thank you to Tim Conway, Don Knotts and Lang Elliott for such a fun movie, and to Henstooth Video for such a great presentation on Blu-ray.

Private Eyes
This is a fantastic and funny movie. I remember watching as a kid and still remember many of the lines. Watched it with my kids and they thought it was funny to. Excited to hive it in my collections.

Worth the Double Dip.
This is a review for the Blu-ray release of "The Private Eyes". I have had the original DVD full-frame release, and this Blu-ray looks amazing by comparison. Better than I would have ever thought it would have looked for an 1980's low budget film. Hen's Tooth did a great job on the picture quality. The sound is alright. Modest special features. Exactly only three: Original trailer in SD, producion photos, and commentary with Tim Conway. Now on to my review. I will base my review on two things: Performance (How the disc looks and sounds), & Content (What is being watched or the main reason you might buy this product).Performance (5 Stars):This is a single disc with plain (Thankfully not eco) packaging. The film's picture quality is the main selling point. It has a fair amount of grain, but alot of detail in that grain. Colors look great. While not the best picture of newer top notch releases, it shocked me how good this actually looked. A big thank you to Hen's Tooth. The detail and color look great. Some film dirt shows up, as well as some slight jitter. Neither of those are really of any bother. The picture is really worth the upgrade. The sound is not great, but not bad either. It is good for a 2.0 or stereo release. Because this looked better than I thought it would. I give it 5 stars. I don't see this film ever looking any better than this.Content (5 Stars):For fans of Don Knotts and Tim Conway this is a treat. Tim Conway plays the funny man to Don Knotts' straight man. His straight man does have some funny bits too. It is really a spoof of Sherlock Holmes. Don Knotts plays Inspector Winship (Sherlock Holmes) and Tim Conway plays Dr. Tort (Dr. Watson). The story even takes place in the UK. A murder of a Lord and Lordess must be solved, and most of the story takes place in a mansion. Two very funny actors being very funny. I really like it, so thus my 5 Stars.I am sure that some might not like this movie as much, or think that the picture and sound aren't that great. The price can be a big issue too. It is around $30 due to Hen's Tooth not being a big company. The wait to get a copy is pretty long as well. All in all for me I really enjoyed this film on Blu-ray. The film was shot open matte. The full frame edition was for TV and does have more picture on the top and bottom. This wide-screen edition was made for theaters and has more image to the sides. The framing was for the theather version, as the film doesn't look cropped. This wide-screen or theather version is the version that I would choose. Thanks for any who read this.
