Good Asian Volume 1

I enjoyed the setting, genre, and found the art very complimentary.
The Good Asian, by Pornsak Pichetshote and Alexandre Tefenkgi (Image)I picked this trade up just after it received a 2022 Eisner nomination for “Best Limited Series”. I really appreciated the historical context and references both throughout the story and the added appendix in the back. I enjoyed the setting, genre, and found the art very complimentary. As far as the crime story, I wasn’t exactly blown away, but I am definitely intrigued with the overall quality of the book to come back for the next one. I have already shared this book with a friend.

History and Noir!
I loved The Good Asian. I wasn’t sure what I’d think but the mix of history with an atypical noir story had me hooked. Having this “oriental” detective really lent a different feel to other noir stories. Very curious what happens next!

Complex story made difficult read by Art WARNING Cliffhanger ending
I feel a lot better about this book now that I see volume two is out in a few months . I normally check for cliffhanger endings but forgot to this time . The story is quite good , with lots sold historical research behind it ( I did historical background research for a series of mystery novels for 40 years which is what attracted me to the book). It was a hard read I think mainly due to the art and especially the coloring. The lapse into monochromal pages added nothing to the flow of the book in fact broke up the visual continuity- and if there was a reason for it I couldn't discern it. The flow was really choppy as a result especially given the movement back and for the between flashbacks , historical reference etc.. This is a strong story with a lot of insight that is needed into American History. It is sad that the art hindered it so much. I am looking forward to the second volume to hopefully get the end of the story.

Classic noir indeed
The complex characters and deeply layered plot make this a must read for noir lovers. So well done, it hurt to say goodbye.
