Q: is this a good alternative to a face mask?

I think if you double it up then it would work well for a mask

It fits loosely around your neck but it will keep your neck warm. It stretches easily over your head. I don't like it around my jaw as a mask though as it seems too confining.

It fits me very snugly, but I have a 17" neck and wear a large hat

Vanessa, this covers more then just your neck. It can be warm as just a neck warmer or pulled up to cover your face as well while not losing any neck protection. The picture of it is displayed to show it pulled up over your nose.
