Resilience Builder Program for Children and Adolescents: Enhancing Social Competence and Self-Regulation

I direct a training clinic, supervise the clinical work of others, run practicums and have a private practice focusing on children and adolescence. In each of these contexts I am finding this book to be extremely helpful. Those who are familiar with the relevant scientific research will find each chapter to be deeply rooted in the best evidence regarding what promotes resilience in youth (and I speak here as an author of a parenting book on such). Moreover, this book is highly practical. Each chapter includes a review of materials needed (either easily available in an office or provided in the manual) as well as very specific instructions for how to proceed (this will be especially comforting to those who are new to doing these kinds of interventions). My only critique is that the publisher has not made it clear on the cover that there is a CD included that includes all of the handouts! Oh, and there is also a collection of very useful assessment tools in the back of the book.If you've ever tried it, you know how difficult it is to be evidence based, clinically practical, salient, cost-effective and clear. In my estimation the authors have done a superlative job on each of these counts.

I used this program with fifth graders in a school setting. I love the topics covered, activities, conversations generated, and sequence. I’m a big fan of using cbt strategies wi th my school groups, and this fit the bill. I gave four out of five stars because, like so many programs, it just does not factor into account the typical amount of time allotted to working with individuals and groups in a school setting, and the content was more than I could cover in a typical 40 min (one period) time frame.

As a parent looking to help an adolescent with resilience, I found this book more useful as a reference or tool for running a course rather than as a resource to provide direct assistance. Would encourage author/publisher to put images to browse to assist future buyers in deciding whether this is a good fit.Still looking. But this wasn't what I (we) needed.

Purchased for school district. Since I didn't hear any complaints (which I would), I can only assume that teacher was happy with the item.
