African adventure and sizzling romance
Clark Gable is an animal trapper in Africa to bring back alive the various animal catches for the zoos. Ava Gardner comes upon him and his crew thru a boating accident and of course, she is smitten by the handsome Gable. But, it does not stop there as Grace Kelly, an anthropologist, and her husband, come to Gable's camp asking him to take them into the land of the giant Apes on a safari. Gable is smitten by Kelly and agrees to take them to the land of the giant Apes, and Ava Gardner shows her jealosy of his intention for Grace Kelly as she goes along on this adventure. There is great cinema shots of the African safari lands and has plenty of action with the various wild animals in it. The movie is an adventure, entertaining movie even if the love triangle was not part of it. Clark Gable is intent on luring Grace Kelly away from her husband and has a love encounter with her. The drama intensifies as they get to the land of the Giant Apes when Gable plans to make his move to take her away from her husband by telling him that he and Grace Kelly are in love. There is great tension and action when Gable's party encounters the apes. The twist comes at the end as the love triange plays out in a very unique way. A very entertaining movie that has been time tested. And one cannot go wrong with stars of this magnitude including the one and only Clark Gable, as handsome as ever, though older, and two beautiful costars such as Grace Kelly, and Ava Gardner.

Enjoy without reservations
A classic movie. It's so refreshing to watch a film with no filler or wasted scenes, yet the story never feels rushed and the actors all perform beautifully. I'm not familiar with John Ford's other works but the direction style here reminded me of "The African Queen" and "Treasure of the Sierra Madres" directed by John Huston in its elegance and deceptive simplicity. I wasn't expecting the beautiful landscape and wildlife footage or that the African people would be depicted so naturally. I really like all the lead actors, Gable, Gardner, and Grace Kelly, but had put off seeing this film because I assumed there would be some racism in the depictions of the African people. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised on that point. There's no cartoonish racism, and except for the white men calling the african men "boys" and their assumption that the white men will get the credit & reward for the Africans' labor (capturing the wild animals) no other racism. The sound track of actual Africans singing their own music is simply beautiful.

John Ford's Africa
"Mogambo" features three of Hollywood's (at the time) greatest stars (Gable, Gardner and up-and-coming Kelly) in a love trilogy set in Africa. What separates this film from others of the genre is, of course, John Ford. At the top of his game, Ford was known not only as a consummate story teller, but an expert in creating a "visual universe" for the viewer....the Africa he captures transports the viewer to that continent, the sights and sounds becoming part of the experience. Performances are uniformly excellent---particularly supporting actors, and, as always with a John Ford production, the storyline is compelling and fast-paced. Although references to natives as "boys" and the frequent portrayal of the slaughter of wild animals will make 21st century viewers cringe a bit, the story is superb and worth a second (even third viewing).....Ford was a genius, and this is his picture from beginning to end---to any John Ford fan, that pretty well sums it up.

Great classic movie for it's time.
Great classic movie. Nice to see Grace Kelly being the bitch for once. Yes, I know that this movie is bad for this day and age. Hunting the gorillas is really bad. But it's Hollywood glamour.

Gets better with a second viewing
I'm a big fan of this film for its guilty pleasures and would like to give it 5 stars for my personal enjoyment but that wouldn't do justice to the true John Ford classics. This one is dynamite but, truthfully, 3 1/2 stars is more like it. This is a corny potboiler "movie movie" where bridled loins and unbridled passion meet with great star power. Grace Kelly is smokin' as the repressed English wife/marm of a sincere but dull Brit. But Ava Garder as a brassy urban night-lifer dropped in the middle of East Africa to keep the party goin' steals the show. Polar opposites, the two of them orbit around macho Clark Gable's big game hunter, everyone lusting for someone or something. And since the grass is always greener and he is a hunter after all, Gable is less interested in Ava's easy virtue than Kelly's cool chastity. John Ford rarely, if ever, did the romantic/sex thing to this extent (though John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara do steam it up in a few) but he goes the distance here. Set in a sweaty dangerous jungle full of hot and humid eyes and bodies, and toss in a gorilla hunt for added symbolism.........good stuff. Conformity of 1950s marriages are challenged here by Hollywood non-comformists so the general population didn't have to. The trailer is hilarious for all the references to the smoldering African atmosphere. Nothing to take seriously but well crafted period piece with mercurial John Ford at the helm. Good price for an atypical Ford collectible

Wonderfully different African
I was reading some rewiews on some other danish websites, which complained that the end was not right. Vic should have stayed a lonesome man. But the end of the movie is both a bit surprising and funny. It brings a smile at ones face, and it's the right end for me. I love happy ends. This rare DVD was all the money worth, though I watched it with english subtitles.Which makes me looking forward to watch the DVD the 2nd time.It would be a purpose to upgrade the colours and the volume, which on this DVD is far too low.Ava Gardner didn't win any Oscars, but Kelly did. One should notice Ava Gardner singing alone with only a pianoplayer in the middle of the movie. Which really was her own voice. In many other movies the actors was not allowed to sing, and some real singers voices was overdubbed. But this is one of the few times in a Hollywood movie, when there was not a lot of orchestra playing in the background.I haven't seen the Kelly Oscar winning movie yet. In this movie Gardner is shining like a diamond, and the far better actor of the two of them. Though one must not unterestimate Kellys more silent difficult role.I think Gardner should have won an Oscar once in her lifetime. Maybe she was unlucky that Audrey Hepburn (which also won to little numbers of Oscars) won with "Roman Holiday" in 1954.It's a shame that many of Ava Gardners movies like: "Showboat, Flying Dutchman, Bhowani Junction, The night of Iguano" etc. is so rare and expensive. This movie really made me a true Gardner-fan. Because I've watched the best one (probably) The Barefoot Comtessa already. And I'm buying her book.Clarke Gable and the African atmosphere is really good too. When some people don't regard this as one of John Fords best movies, I won't agree.I believe this is one of the best. 5 stars without no doubt.

Nice film with Ava Gardner.
Nice quality DVD of the colour film originally released in 1953 with a young Grace Kelly (later Princess Grace of Monaco) and very attractive Ava Gardner (then 30 years old) and an older Clark Gable (the King of Hollywood) in this remake of his earlier film Red Dust (1932) with famous platinum blonde Jean Harlow.
