They are pfoa free, and made from ptfe, the substance used to make pace makers and heart stints.

I'm not sure what you mean by regular waffles. The Krups waffles are not as deeply indented as Belgian waffles, if that is your concern. The machine works really well. I love it.

Are the plates reverse side flat for pancakes, sandwiches, etc?

No, they're not. It's waffles only with this item!

How thick are the actual waffles? I've seen a variety of vague answers, from "standard" to "medium". Please provide the exact thickness.

They are not at all like real Belgian Waffles. Pockets are only 5/16". Might be a good waffle maker, but it does not make Belgian waffles. Sending mine back.
