Puzzle in Paradise - a winning recipe
I love a good police mystery and the Koa Kane books are no exception. This one includes political intrigue and military spy craft all in the wonderful world of Pele's home in Hawaii.McCain lovingly incorporates Hawaiian history, culture and the diverse natural environment into his stories inviting us to visit and enjoy. I'm sure I'm not the only reader who wants to visit in person! I'll certainly continue to visit through these books even if I can't get there myself.

Excellent Storyteller
I loved this book and the first one in this series. Just having spent 3 weeks on the Big Island and visiting many of the settings described, gave me a thrill and revealed how good the author was at creating a sense of place and atmosphere. The characters are all interesting and really take you in to their world. Indigenous voices and concerns about appropriation of land culture artifacts are presented in a diplomatic way. On top that the story is exciting and the police procedural exacting and sometimes amusing. Look forward to the next in the series. A Tiny Hillerman style adventure with Hawaiin panache.

Good Read with an Hawaiian Twist
The story captures your attention. Kao Kane is an interesting figure as he is haunted by his past but he does not let that stop him from doing his duty. Neither does roadblocks from his chief or others. I like the incorporation of Hawaiian culture into the story; it makes you feel that you are on the islands.

A Great Read
Couldn’t wait for my copy to arrive. Read it start to finish almost without interruption. It is a spellbinder. This installment of Koa and his adventures is well crafted. The author has woven an exciting and intricate thriller, with lots so twists and turns. I’m happy to see Koa develop as a character and detective. It is fascinating to follow his thinking and feelings as he confronts this complex mystery. As in his first Koa mystery, the author uses the his obvious familiarity with the Big Island to give story much authenticity . Hopefully Koa will we’ll see another Koa Kane soon.

Sounds like Home! Aloha!
A good read... I lived for 40 years on the Big Island of Hawaii (Puna area) where this novel takes place. The descriptions are great, especially for the descriptions of politicians who who run the State, with mirrored corruption. I will read other novels by this author ! Enjoy

Off The Grid Hits The Mark
Detective Koa Kane returns with another gripping mystery to unravel. The tale is suspenseful and well crafted. The setting in the Big Island enhances the story with lava flows intertwined with the webs of deceit. Highly recommended along with McCaw's earlier introduction of the Koa character.

complicated crime, horribly realistic.
Did not like death by volcano, interesting Hawaiian police work, politics. Is it realistic?

Really cracking story and realistic characters.
I most liked that the story took place in Hawaii as I lived there for many years. I liked the plausible story and the minimalist episodes of sex that in most books borders on pornography. The characters were real and the the main character, like most of us was a flawed individual who was trying for redemption. Even though it was a novel, it felt like it could be real. Great prose and diction, the words flowed and the spelling was on point. I liked and will read more from this author.
