James (MacArthur New Testament Commentary Series)

What can you say about a John MacArthur commentary. Very helpful for Bible Study

We've been a Bible reading, church going Christian couple for the last 25 years. We've attended Bible Study for the last 18 years. This commentary on James opened our eyes, spiritually speaking, to things we didn't understand. Are you experiencing tough times? James says, "Consider it all joy...when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance." James 1:2-3 We had read these verses many times, but never were joyful in the middle of a trial. MacArthur explains eight reasons why the Lord allows trials, and then expounds upon the five key means for persevering through trials, given by James. He closes the topic of trials and perseverance with commentary on the reward for perseverance. This alone is worth the cost of the book, but is just the beginning. This book has changed our lives, greatly for the better, and we are only on page 136 of 290. We are taking our time; rereading, discussing, reviewing, journaling, and praying.

MacArthur is an intelligent, gifted theologian, preacher, etc. I have many of his bible commentaries. This one is not as in depth as some of the others he has published, but it may be perfect for the level of detail you are looking for.

Sometimes in some of MacArthurs commentaries it seems he gets a bit “wordy”, but in James that’s not so much the case. He handles very well some of James most difficult and confusing statements. This book will be particularly useful to believers who are relatively new readers of commentaries.

Blessed by this book! Great commentary to try and interpret the letter of James as James intended to write it by referencing historical background and also careful analysis of the words used. Would definitely recommend!

Can’t go wrong with John MacArthur. I know I can trust what this commentary says.
