Can a cat get in? Our cat is obsessed with bread so we have to keep it in the microwave currently.

I just have to add that I am ALSO here to buy a breadbox to keep our cat away from the bread bags! I'm loving that I am not alone in this quest!

is the top flat? could you place salt and pepper shakers, condiment bottles on the top?

Flattish? Small salt & pepper shakers will fit. As well as small condiments.

Does it really keep breads fresher longer?

I can't say yes for sure. But I think so. I kept my bread out in the open on the counter (not in the Fridge). I got this to clear off my kitchen counters. It certainly looks nicer and holds a couple of loaves and bagels as well. Works well for my situation. Hopes this helps.
