Next best thing to a palm mute
I bought this with low expectations, so I was surprised at how effective and how well it works! I can palm mute a guitar but find it difficult to palm mute a 34" (standard) scale bass. I play over the base of the neck, far from the bridge. It's the next best thing to a palm mute.

Works
It is very good. The only problem is it doesn't work very well on the high g string. It is over muted that the high string becomes almost dead in sound in many spots on the fingerboard. I do use it because I play Salsa music and I need a muffed sound to give me a close sound to an electric upright Ampeg Bass. The Fump works well but it needs to be tweaked to have the high string sound. It's a good product.

Not Worth It!
I was expecting this device to be of great value to my playing. To be honest, it's terrible. It totally deadens the strings. No string resonance at all. I'm going back to using a cut up piece of kitchen sponge.A total waste of money. Don't bother with this item. It's nothing but a gimmick.

Love this mute!
Inexpensive, but changes how you play, write, groove. It's like a whole new instrument. Tons of fun.

Works best on wider radius guitars
I've tried the FUMP on several different guitars and found it works best on necks that have wider radii. Also, you need to slide it in place from the high to low strings, so the looser part near the opening is dealing with the thicker strings, while the tighter end handles the thinner strings.I found on most Fenders and Fender copies that use the 9-1/2" radius that the FUMP doesn't really work right, because the curve of the strings around the fingerboard are too uneven for the mute to sit properly in place. However, on fingerboards with flatter radii, like most acoustics and Gibson or Gibson-like guitars, it'll settle in place fairly well. You can also adjust the two halves of the mute by loosening or tightening the screw that holds the thing together, for a more or less snug fit. It can't be put on or taken off instantly, but it can be adjusted quickly enough to prevent interfering much with performing a set. You'll need your front person to keep the crowd entertained a bit longer while you're taking care of business. Work that out in rehearsal beforehand. All in all, the FUMP isn't bad if you want significant muting, like when you're trying to simulate an upright bass with an electric. Personally, I prefer a light touch by the mute, to keep strings from sounding sympathetic vibrations, like when playing a 6-string bass. My hands aren't big enough to cover all six strings during complicated or fast-moving passages in the music, so the mute is most helpful in keeping the strings I'm not using at that moment from ringing out and spoiling the overall sound.I prefer to use other Gruv Gear products for light touch muting and rarely use the FUMP, because it's a bit too much for my taste. However, those who need a significant mute will find this works fairly well, when used correctly.

Don’t waste your money
It does not hit the strings evenly. The adhesive is letting go as well. Not a good tool.

it works
My praise band use to always complain that mu bass was too hot..but they do not want to adjuat he output. The mute solved the problem..my bass now produces a double bass feel that sounds a bit jazzy and depending on how I play very funky. The Tech board turned up the volume on my bass by request of the Band. I also have the mute wrap which i use often to soften tone on slower phrasing.

If it fits your bass and you like using a string mute, it's pretty cool
I play a Danelectro "shorthorn" DC59 bass. I use a string mute but sometimes I want to remove it for a particular song. That's where this thing earns its keep. I can remove it, and then re-install it in one quick move. It works quite well for me but it will not fit all basses. A lot depends on the design of the bridge, string height, etc. I can only speak for using it on the Danelectro shorthorn model.

Bon effet Muted

Great Bass Accessory
brilliant for producing lovely muted jazz tones in the style of a double bass especially if combined with flat wound or tape wound strings. Also good for funk and fusion playing gives you more flexibility for your right hand so you can leave the muting to the Fump. Everybody bassist should have one ! they work well on fretted or fretless as well.
