Excellent and much appreciated!
This new quarterly journal does a great job of bringing to the forefront images of the male figure which have often been relegated to a lesser status in art, or worse yet, labeled "gay art". (Would we call images of the female figure "straight art"?)I have no idea if any of the five artists covered in this issue is gay. And in fact, the most "explicit" works shown were created by female artist Carolyn Weltman. The other artists included are painters E. Gibbons, Richard Stabbert, Ron Griswold, plus sculptor Sabin Howard (incorrectly listed on the cover as "Howard Sabin"). I appreciated the diversity of the artists' styles presented, as well as the historical perspective in an article about 19th century painter Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin (a student of Ingres). There's also an article on a gallery (Lyman-Eyer) which specializes in male figurative art and a large directory of web-sites of artists of the male figure. Many of the reproductions of the paintings are excellent--you can actually see the depth of paint strokes in the works. I was familiar with some of these works before and never knew that the paint was so thickly applied!I'm eagerly awaiting the next issue of the Art of Man. They've done an artful job of presenting it.

A Milestone
This magazine offers a unique perspective on the male figure in art. It's amazing how the male body can generate such different renditions! The diverse approaches that the artists presented have make this magazine a must for any collector of figurative art. I strongly recommend it and I wish it continues to make me discover wonderful artists.
