Is there a way for the pin to be left open when you know you'll be coming in and out of the door frequently?

Yes. Either just leave the pin down or if it is a Toledo lock then the pin can be removed completely. I have both and the pin can be left open on either. Hope this helps they are very secure locks for patio doors.

Can this be mounted on the outside of a sliding glass door?

Probably yes, but it depends on the mechanical details of your door. Check Toledo’s downloadable document. Please be aware that if you put this lock on the outside of a door, it will no longer be an exit in case of fire or earthquake. That may violate fire safety regulations, depending on where you live. There is no way to open a door from the inside if the Toledo lock is locked on the outside.

Is there a stainless steel version for outdoors?

No. However, the die-cast case is well suited for outdoor application.
