Cold comfort form
This film recounts an event from Cold War days when relations between Russia and The West were evenworse than today, with its leader Nikita Kruschev seen as being an unpredictable bellicose personalitylooking to boost the power and influence of the USSR and communism around the world. This becomesevident with events leading to what history calls "The Cuban Missile Crisis". A Russian GRU colonel, Oleg Penkovsky, sees Kruschev as an unstable threat to world peace and nuclear war a very real possibility. He contacts western intelligence and they use British businessman Greville Wynne as a courier forsecrets passed to him by Penkovsky during fabricated business enterprises that take Wynne to aRussia keen to get what can be obtained from "The West". But espionage takes a turn for the worse whenPenkovsky is suspected and detained, followed by the detention and incarceration of Wynne himself. The film takes a downbeat humdrum view of the procedures and risks involved in this type of clandestineactivity but managed to keep this viewer hooked throughout, enhanced by the two lead performances, both entirely plausible in their presentation of the individuals, their motives and their fates; one to beexecuted, the other imprisoned not knowing if and when he too might suffer the same fate.

Cold War spy film based on fact
This was a an interesting and engaging film based on the true Cold War spy exploits of British businessman, Greville Wynne, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, who brings quality to the main role. The movie at a steady pace highlighting the relationship between Wynne and Soviet agent, Oleg Penkovsky. The film is a reminder of how intense the Cold War intelligence game was in the early-1960s especially as the US and the Soviet Union raced to build-up nuclear arsenals. Cuban missile crisis unfolds through the film as two men play their roles in aiding peaceful resolution to this dangerous situation in October 1962.A film that should give younger viewers a useful insight into spycraft that played out during the Cold War years.

Really good historical spy story
Very good historical spy story, based as far as I know on what actually happened sometime in the 1960s, involving MI6, the CIA and the KGB (or the GRU). Excellent acting.
