How do you travel with it?

Make sure you turn it off, and then just slip it into your carryon. The batteries last for over a month, and when I am lecturing it is on about 8 hours a day. I do carry a charging cable with me, just in case.

are any apple keyboards backlit?

The Magic keyboards 1 & 2 are not backlit.

Why doesn’t the escape key on this keyboard work?

Not sure, the esc key on mine works fine. You might want to go into System Settings > Keyboards, and see if you are using the correct template.
