Yes, this is a briefcase; it can be used for business work or daily shopping.

I've never placed it on a scale, but I can easily guesstimate that it weighs between 2~3 pounds probably closer to two. The leather is very thick and durable. There are many zippered compartments for just about anything. The leather is rough and durable. It is NOT smooth and shiny like hi-end leather gloves. Personally, I like the bag as it even houses my tablet when I'm out and about. Hope this helps.
