SO much better than going to the salon!!!!
This gel kit is FABULOUS. First of all, this kit is $60.00 at Walgreens. I paid $39.99 so you can't go wrong there. I used to get my nails done every payday. Each time I went it would cost me $30.00 ($35 with a tip) and a lot of times I would end up disappointed by the poor job they did. You are supposed to remove gels by soaking them in acetone and some nail places try to just drill it off (NOOOO!!). Anyway, I was sick of spending tons of money and being disappointed so I bought this kit. I got the 'Shall We Dance" kit. It comes with everything you need: Base coat, color, top coat, lamp, acetone (for removal), nail wipes (to clean the nail before and after), and a nail file and stick. I was a little worried about using the kit myself because I have tried one other kit before that I ended up returning to Wal-Mart because my nails chipped the same day I painted them. I started out by unpacking everything and READING the INSTRUCTIONS. This was good because the instructions give some good tips to make the color last. The hardest part of the entire process is removing your previous gel color. You have to use cotton and soak it in acetone, place it on your nail, and wrap the tip of your nail in tin foil. I do this one hand at a time because wrapping your second hand with tin foil on your first hand is extremely difficult. You let the acetone soak your nails for 10-15min and then the previous gel color falls right off. Next you trim and buff your nails and then wipe them down with a wipe (included in the kit). It is recommended to do one hand fully and then move to the next and I recommend following that tip. The instructions tell you to keep your nails under the light for 30 seconds before the next step. I did one minute each time because I think it helps set the gels better (I could be crazy-who knows). Everything that came in the kit worked perfectly. I love the "Shall We Dance" color. After doing my nails the first time, they lasted 2 weeks and it was the same quality as going to the salon...granted I had to do the work myself, but at least it was done how I wanted it done ;) I just redid my nails with a new color purchased from Walgreens....(TIP: Do NOT purchase color from stores...it is HALF the price on Amazon) and it was easy and my nails look like I just got home from the salon. BUY THIS KIT. You get your money's worth out of the first use.

Love it for fingers - AND toes!
I had been spending $60+ every two weeks at the nail salon getting gel manicures and pedicures. My nails looked great, but the expense wasn't so great. I found this kit on Amazon and figured I would give it a try. It was less than the cost of one mani/pedi at the salon, so I figured it was worth a shot. I tried it on my fingers first. The "Shell We Dance" color is a nice, delicate pink. I do agree with another review that says after a few days it develops a beigey tone, but it wasn't that noticeable for me, or that bothersome. The week after I did my nails I: spent a lot of time in my garden, processed and canned vegetables, washed several sinkfuls of dishes, went swimming, cleaned my house, and did many other things that are generally hard on nails. The color lasted a good week and then I had some lifting on some of the polish, so I took it off. I generally use clear polish on my nails in the summertime because I am so busy, so since that first manicure I've just been using the basecoat and the topcoat, and it lasts a good two weeks. I then tried this on my toes. There are no instructions in the kit for doing this, but figured I'd try it. Oh. Mah. Gah. JUST like the salon, lasts two weeks no problem. Stays hard and shiny the whole time. I got three additional colors and have tried two of them so far and LOVE the effect. I also love A. not having the salon expense and 2. not having to redo my toenails all the time. Here are my tips for making this kit work: - As some others have mentioned, the color coats need two cycles of the light to truly "set." I put on the first color coat, two light cycles, then the second color coat, two light cycles, then the top coat, one light cycle. After that, I use the alcohol wipes and my nails are dry and ready to go. - The included final wipes in the kit are, as others have said, just alcohol wipes. You probably have some in your prepackaged first aid kit in your bathroom. So don't feel the need to rebuy the Sally Hansen ones when you run out. - I have had no trouble getting the polish to come off following the included directions in the kit. - As some others have said, be careful about overlapping polish onto cuticles or skin. That will cause the polish to lift pretty quickly. I have had to redo a couple of nails after I wasn't careful enough about getting polish on my cuticle. - The instructions tell you to rough up your nail surface before applying the polish, but be careful about doing this. You just need a few swipes of the buffer. The polish does hold better if you do like they do at the salon, and wipe off your nails thoroughly with remover RIGHT BEFORE you apply the basecoat. - It seems like a few people have had trouble with allergic reactions. This is a shame and having had reactions to other products in the past, I am very sympathetic, but allergies are a risk with any product people put on their skin. Might be good to be on the safe side and try the polish (from base to topcoat) on ONE nail (like a small toenail, or your pinky nail) and see if you have a reaction. I also hope folks are reporting reactions to Sally Hansen and not just reviewing on Amazon, as who knows if Sally Hansen is reading these reviews? And they should know about allergic reactions to the product. Just like at the salon, the greatest thing about gel polish is that there's no drying time after you're done with the final light cycle. Spending 20 minutes immobile, waiting at the salon for traditional polish to dry? "Ain't nobody got time for that!" I love being able to paint my nails and go. The other night, my husband saw me painting right before we were going out and groaned, because in the past that would mean a significant delay in leaving the house. I said "WAIT FOR IT" and when the top coat had set, I put on my shoes and we were ready to go. I LOVE having this convenience in my own home. Thanks to Sally Hansen for making the kit. My only request - more fun colors please! The existing colors are nice but a little too conservative. Would love to see bright blue, glitter, metallic, etc. Color choices not withstanding, I LOVE this product!

It's Okay for the Price
This is an okay gel nail polish starter kit for the price. I had reward points and paid around $25 for this set. This is definitely not worth full price, so make sure you buy this set when it is on sale. The LED lamp takes 90-120 seconds to cure properly. The 30 seconds that the box says is a huge exaggeration. My UV lamp cures at 120 seconds, so I'm not saving that much time by using the LED lamp. The lamp also gets really hot, so if you're sensitive to heat, you may want to wear gloves with the fingertips cut out that will protect your skin. The base coat, nail polish, and top coat goes on pretty smoothly, but it definitely does not last two weeks. My nails lasted 6 days with the Sally Hansen polish before I started seeing peels. I've gotten pretty good at painting my nails, and I've used other gel nail polish brands that lasted two weeks or more, so I know that it's the Sally Hansen gel nail polish brand that's at fault here. Shell We Dance is also a really ugly color. It's a dull pink, and I don't plan on using it again unless I can find a nice glittery nail polish to cover it up. I only bought the Shell We Dance kit because it was $10 cheaper than the other two colors. The nail cleanser pads dry out quickly. I opened one and it dried 2 minutes later. You're better off using plain alcohol. Remember to wipe off your nails after putting on the top coat to get rid of the stickiness. Overall, it's a decent starter set for the price. I wasn't expecting perfection for $25. If you want shorter cure times and two weeks of chip free polish, find another kit, but quality starter LED kits are very pricey. I'm satisfied with this kit for now. This kit is also way more expensive if you buy it at drugstores (my local CVS sales it for $60, and this is definitely NOT worth that much money) so make sure you get the kit and the nail polishes on Amazon.

So far a 5
So far I am giving this kit a 5-star rating. I was fortunate and I had two of my salon-manicured nails chip on Saturday so I was able to try out this kit on those two nails. So far so good! It's been three days and there has not been any chipping and I must put in the disclaimer that my nails right now are in horrible condition. In January I reluctantly got acrylics put on my hands and the girl who did them used a drill on the first fill and left ridge marks on my nail beds. I decided to go to another girl and her product started lifting, leaving me with a mold on one of my fingers. One month ago I decided to have the nails removed and go with gel. I knew they would not be strong but I needed to do something. The girl I went to did not soak off the acrylics but used one of those plastic slider things to remove the nails. This left my nails very, very thin and rough. After my first salon gel manicure I had nails chipping and lifting in the first week. I went in to get four of them fixed 10 days later and she used power and glue to strengthen them. I went back 10 days after that to have them all redone. Well, one of the first things I noticed is that the manicurist did not soak off the gel with acetone. Instead she took a shortcut and used the drill to drill them down but there was obvious old gel still on my nails. I asked for power and glue on them all, but still within a week two of them had chipped. As you can imagine, this whole process of trying to have nice nails, from the first acrylic set, has cost a lot of money and way more than I can afford or believe I should be spending on nails ... which is why I bought this kit. I figured if the manicurists can do it, so can I and for a LOT less money. Anyway, I had a lot of trouble getting the old gel (and powder and glue) off my two nails and I probably did not get it all off but the gel is sticking on the two nails I did myself. In fact, applying the product is so easy and it does not take very much time. This weekend I am going to set all my fingers in a bowl of acetone for however long it takes to get all the old gel and glue off. Then I am going to take my time and do a really nice manicure on my own hands. I think this kit is well worth the money, especially when the price is marked right. I purchased some other manicure accessories today. I will already have paid for the kit and the accessories before I get done with my third manicure.

Beautiful nails, with caveats
I own several different gel nail colors besides the Sally Hansen, including several colors of Gelish and Finger Paints brand gel polishes, and this one is the surprising hands-down winner, having several plusses going for it: 1. First and foremost, the Sally polishes provide the best color without streaking, last the longest, and smooth out the best. 2. It's fairly ubiquitous--you don't need to go to Sally Beauty Supply or a salon. Target and WalMart both carry this, and Walgreens and CVS probably do as well. 3. If you buy the starter kit, you have everything you need--no need to pick up additional bonders, top coats, or even a lamp, as it comes with one of those, too. 4. It's fairly easy to apply (as long as you mind some important application tips), so it's a great starter kit for newbies. 5. This product is LED reactive rather than UV reactive, which is a BIG plus. No need to protect your hands from harmful UV rays, and the curing time is considerably faster than UV. 6. All gel nail polishes are supremely good at self-leveling, and this one is no exception...maybe even slightly better at it than the others. No matter how many times you brush or re-brush the color onto the nail, it will always smooth out to a glass-like surface, and NEVER leaves brush strokes. Ever. If you do it right, you can REALLY wind up with a beautiful, very durable set of nails that should last you considerably longer than regular lacquer nail polish manicures do, and will help fortify against breakage if you have brittle nails. Having said all that, if you've never done gel nail color before, there are some important caveats to consider before switching from your laquer nail polishes to gel: 1. With laquers, you could get away with a quick polish job, only putting on 1 layer and being done in 10 minutes. That would never be the case with the gels, as all three steps, with curing time in between each layer, is required in order for the product to set, and can take typically about an hour to do all nails. 2. When removing the gel polish (regardless of the brand), I find that most times, even though much of the polish WILL soak off if wrapped in acetone and foil, there are nevertheless typically some parts of the nail polish that don't want to soak off, even if I soak them longer or add more acetone. And if the polish doesn't just slide off after soaking and you wind up peeling even just a little, your nails will wind up severely thinned. I find I have to take a break from gels every once in a while for that reason. 3. Although we save tons of time during application because it dries so fast and so completely, on the other side (removing the product), all that time savings is erased, and then some. It takes as much or even MORE time to take OFF the polish as it does to put it on, and is rather messy. If you wish to remove your current color to put on a new color, it will take you a good 2 hours or more from start to finish...just to change the color of your nails. If after considering this you do decide to try this kit (you DO get a beautiful set of nails and it's fairly easy to learn), just remember that brushing the color layer on THINLY is paramount. Remember that, because this product levels itself so well, it will spread after you put it on, and you want to make sure to NOT let it spread to your cuticles, as this product does NOT stick to skin and will eventually cause lifting if any of it DOES touch the sides or cuticles. Don't be afraid to go back over your nail after applying: Brush back over your nails, lifting off any excess polish and wiping the excess back into the bottle. Because the polish is so self-leveling, re-brushing like this will NOT leave your polish uneven, tacky, or full of brush strokes. It'll smooth out to glass every time.

Think twice before ordering this online
Two sides to my review - LOVE the product, HATE the specific one that was delivered. I thought I hated the product after trying it - just wouldn't dry! which I see a lot of people complain about here. The problem isn't in the product, its the instructions that come with the kit. After talking to a friend who does gels all the time, she filled me in on how to fix that problem - 1. you HAVE to wipe your finished nails (that means after each step - base, color and top coat, have all been applied and cured) with the alcohol pads included in the kit (or isopropyl alcohol in general) . I know the instructions say to do so as a prep, but it's also the only way to get the sticky residue off your finished nail - don't worry, your nails stay glossy and great after wiping them clean. 2. It also helps to wipe your nails after applying and curing the basecoat too but thats optional 3. Tip - the pads included in the kit dry out quickly so make sure to put them back in the package if you use the same one to prep your nail as you do to wipe the finished nail. If its dry, the pad will just stick to your nail rather than take the stickiness off Why I hate the one delivered - the gel color that came in my kit didn't even come close to what I expected or resemble what was on the box in the slightest. It was like a translucent hot pink (UGLY). I bought the exact same color (Shell we dance) separately at the drugstore and it was completely different. It was as I expected it to be - soft pink, less translucent - much closer to what is on the box. The one included was obviously old or defective, I double checked that it was marked as 'shell we dance'. Wish I could have returned but NO RETURNS as its considered flammable.

Must Buy!
Having my nails look pristine is a staple in my overall aesthetic, but I am HARD on my nails, i.e. I frequently wash my hands, I foster dogs that like to nibble and play, etc. Painting my nails several times a week is too time consuming, and I refuse to pay for expensive salon trips. Therefore, I reviewed at-home gel kits for months before finally deciding to purchase Sally Hansen. reviewed is I made my decision because (a) the majority of the reviews from several websites were positive, (b) I can get the colors from CVS and Ulta which are both close by, and (c) to be honest, I got a gift card from Amazon and this kit was on sale! I am 100% satisfied with this kit, especially for the price I paid. After reading the reviews from several sources, I amended the process in four important ways: 1. After I prepped my nails (e.g. filing, shaping, cleaning, etc.), I cleaned each nail with alcohol to get rid of any oil. 2. I cured my nails under the UV light TWICE rather than for the 30 seconds it recommended. 3. The "Shell We Dance" was a bit light for me, so I used three coats. I have since purchased a different color that only needed two coats. 4. I used a bottle of alcohol to clean the tacky mess off my nails when I was done (rather than the alcohol wipes the kit includes). I read the ingredients in the wipes; it is just alcohol. So, I found using my own alcohol with a cotton ball was more effective. I have completed two sets of nails so far, and they have lasted with out chipping for about 9-14 days. PROS: A. Budget friendly B. Colors, Top-Coat, Base-Coat, etc. can be purchased at local chains such as CVS, Ulta, and Walmart C. The gel shellac is strong and (for me, and I am HARD on my nails) didn't peel or chip *If I did have ONE nail that chipped, I could have fixed it at home instead of making an appointment at a salon! D. Super easy to use CONS: A. Lamp is a bit small, so I had to do my thumbs separately B. Time consuming because of the size of the lamp and the need to press the UV light for a second curing. The entire process (cleaning and prepping nails, painting, curing, etc.) took me about 45 minutes both times. C. Quantity: the nail polish allowance is much smaller than normal polish. Just keep this in mind. You get longer wear with gel polish, but it still seems like the colors run out rather quickly, especially if you use more than one coat. OVERALL. . . I will be using this kit for a long time to come. I have received copious comments on how gorgeous my nails look. I've been asked numerous times, "Where do you get your nails done?" It's wonderful to be able to do them at home while watching my favorite show or listening to music. LOVE THIS KIT!

Great product!
I wasn’t sure how well this product would work or if I’d be able to use it properly by myself, but it’s awesome! Just follow the directions and you have a beautiful manicure in minutes! The removal was really easy, too. I was worried about the removal as sometimes gel removal is difficult and hard on the nail bed. This removed quickly and without issue. I’m tough on my nails but my manicure still looked great by the end of the second week. Very impressed 😊

It's not Black!
It's not even black at all, it's a horrible red colour! And it's LED cured as well, absolute trash to me. So annoyed spending 15 dollars on this nail polish! 😡
