A goodly number of twists to the ending.
A bit slow moving but a very satifising conclusion. Did not figure out who did it until the Inspector made the revel. Enjoy it.

I enjoy the mystery
I enjoy the mysteries of JR Ellis. However, I don’t enjoy the author going on a rant in the middle of a story. I understand that the author wanted to get his point across. I get it. I, also, understand that authors want to make political statements. Although, I agree with his sentiments, I didn’t particularly care for the overkill, somewhere in the middle, that almost made me close the book. I was glad he returned to solving the murders. I may be in the minority, but I enjoy reading crime solving for simply for pleasure.

always a good read
I’m working my way thru this series which i read just before falling asleep at night. I find I prefer Ellis’s soothing scenery to images from any tv show to take me off to dreamland.

Good story, nice flow and less distraction
This is, by far, the best of first 7 of Yorkshire Murder Mystery series. The story is fluid and with twists. Most important thing is this book has much less distraction than the previous 6. It is definitely a 5 star. But because it still has some u necessary small distractions i am giving it 4 star. The female partner of the main hero is a completely unrelated character and pages describing unnecessary discussions in the line of the personal relationship of the main hero is completely not needed and never helped the story. It only slows it down.

Enjoyable Series
What can I say other than the series is well written and the characters are interesting. The stories are also a welcome change from many cozy mysteries in that the main character manages to solve hard cases without the assistance of a female amateur sleuth showing him up! However does he pull it off?

Thrilling read!
Fast paced, with twists and turns, carefully dealing with modern issues. Oldroyd is an old school policeman finding his way in modern policing.

Though the book is enjoyable, I would prefer fewer politics
Though I have enjoyed the book as I do all cozies , my only regret is that I find too much feminism in it. I have always felt that the way to have equality Is too simply continue to stand your ground and do what you believe is right.. I have never felt the need to have an organization stand up 4 or with me due to my gender. I am 73 and my mother was an individualist before it was fashionable.

Good plot
I have enjoyed every one of J. R. Ellis' Yorkshire Mysteries. The only qualification I make is that the writing is sometimes a little amateurish, but it doesn't take away from a well-crafted detective story with likeable characters.

A mystery that kept me reading and thinking
I enjoyed this book as I have the previous 6. Ellis provides food for thought as he develops the story and its characters. A group of church goers all in the frame yet who could have committed such a heinous act?I enjoy Oldroyd’s genial yet astute nature and his relationships with his junior officers, partner and sister. It’s always pleasant to visit Yorkshire again with the authors description of the picturesque scenery adding a delightful background to the story.Bring on the next Oldroyd mystery!

Another good book in the series
It helps if you read this series in order but this one could stand alone. Not a lot happens in the personal lives of the characters. The plots are often too intricate but this one was more believable. Enough suspects and motives and someone who knows what church politics and personalities are like. Hope there are more.

Excellent
Once again Mr Ellis has written an intriguing murder mystery. His characters really come to life and his descriptions of the Yorkshire countryside add greatly to the book, almost a murder mystery and travel book combined.I can recommend this to anyone who enjoys a murder mystery, readers of PD James and Ruth Rendell will really enjoy the work of J R Ellis.

Wonderful Series
Happened upon this author by chance and I’m really enjoying the books. Nice characters, some humour and it’s interesting to learn about the Yorkshire area’s geography and history. Looking forward to the next in the series.
