Review: Wonderful stories - Beautiful pictures Review: Perfect for the curious 9 year old - My daughter asked for a Greek mythology book for Christmas. I looked into many different ones; most were pretty vague or didnโt cover the classical gods. Others were too descriptive in the โdistractionsโ of the gods. National Geographic is something I read as a child so I was thrilled to find their take on it. Itโs a massive tome. Complete with a family tree of sorts and the Roman interpretations of each god. This is by far one of her favorites as well. She Carrieโs it to school often and is quoting it to her Grandfather most evenings. Well written and easy to understand for children her age Iโve had a few parents ask where I found it. The art work is stunning; also done in the way youโd see Greek/ Roman frescos. I have a feeling that this book will be in our family a very long time.

Nice visuals. Older kid appropriate content without feeling sanitized
This book strikes a good balance with traditional myths and contextual information, but avoids the more horrific parts of the traditional stories. This is not a sanitized set of tales. There's still plenty of death and war and darkness, but the many nonconsentual romances of Zeus and others are reframed. The visuals are beautiful and haunting. This was a gift for my 8 year old who loves mythology and reference books. He enjoyed this book, reading it from cover to cover in a few days and quoting it to anyone who will listen. Age 8 is probably the youngest this would be appropriate for, but adults will enjoy it too. Table top gamers looking for creative inspiration for adventures would also enjoy this book.

Mostly Kid-Friendly, Beautiful!
The book is engaging in two ways: stories that are just the right length/depth, and beautiful artwork! I bought this for classroom use with elementary students, hoping to find something interesting, but PG. This book has met that need so far! The only nude images are pages 75, 127, and 163, and they are all small images so I was able to color over them with sharpie. Content-wise, the myths I've read have been appropriate without compromising the overall idea.

Older kids
Very nice book and illustrations. Bought it for my 2nd grade classroom. Might be appropriate for older kids, but not 7 year olds.

Greek mythology brought to life with amazing colored drawings, and lyrical text
***** "This is a book meant to dazzle its readers-And it does." The New York Times The new National Geographic Treasury of Greek Mythology, got the "School Library Journal Best Books of 2011, is 2012 Notable Children's Books! Astonishingly, it did not dazzle me, a retired reviewer, it enthralled my being, it captivated me. For three years, since Noah, my grandson was four, I started the search for those dreamland books which mesmerized me, since I was four, before learning to read, its magical drawings recounted it all. Greek mythology was Jacobs ladder for me, even early on I just enjoyed the troubadourary, it opened magical worlds filled with stories of courage, bravery, war, deceit, revenge and love. Just recently I encountered a mother and grandie, a mathematician and linguist with a Ph D that whose love for mythology is greater than mine. Her seventy books on folklore and fairy tales, and her mat hits prove it. Brought to life with amazing colored drawings, and lyrical text by Grandma Donna Jo Napoli, award-winning author, who paired with Artist Christina Balit, the gifted inspirational artist, who illustrated a stunning artwork for the amazing tales of mythical gods, goddesses, monsters and heroes. Aphrodite, Apollo, and Athena, Perseus, and Medusa will fascinate and entertain children's intellect and grow their imagination.

excellent book
My 7-year-old loved this book. The stories are short, but detailed enough to paint the complete picture. Nice photos. I would recommend it for any young one interested in mythology or interesting stories.
