Barbara Sykes' Training Border Collies

Great book - clear and usefull
This book has lots of important information for a border collie puppy owner. One of the most important things we learned that border collies nipping are not rounding you up, they are playing. With that, lots of tips on how to fix. Worthwhile book.

Get This One if You Have a BC!
I really like this book. As a longtime border collie owner, it is refreshing to find a book by an author who truly knows the breed and truly understands the unique training issues. Also, Barbara has some fantastic suggestions, that I as a veterinary nurse and dog trainer, had never heard of! I have implemented a few already with my new pup. Caution to the reader: there are a few issues with medical science inaccuracies. For example, the author warns about too much exercise too young causing hip dysplasia - not true. It's a genetically passed condition and either the individual has malformed hips at BIRTH or not. (Exercise too young can however affect other joints and bone formation..) Also, some of the comments about nutrition are based on myth, not sound medicine. But if you get past those issues, this is a useful and valuable book for border collie owners. I went right back and bought her other book about BCs.

Great book!
This book is great! It is filled with valuable information as well as full color photos.... It not only gives info on caring for your border collie and teaching the most crucial manners, but it actually goes in depth on the breeds history and the character traits associated with each type of border collie. A good book every border collie owner should read!

Not really a training manual for beginners
The author may be very experienced with border collies, but this book is more of a general narrative and overview than it is a training guide. It's worth a read if you want to learn about the breed, but I don't recommend it if you need training/teaching advice.

Clear, simple guidance from a person who knows.
This book not only tells you what to do, but helps you understand why and potential consequences if not done (or done inconsistently). I will read her two books over and over.

One of the best training books I have ever read.
This is a wonderful, insightful, useful book. I love the case stories, shepherds comments and wonderful photos. If you are considering bringing a Border Collie into your home or if you already have one (as I do) buy this book- it is a treasure!

Not really a training book
This is a really interesting book about border collies but I was very disappointed in the training content . It continually tells you what you should train you dog to do, but without the important information that you want. i.e. HOW! For example: To stop your dog being a "chaser" teach it to wait for the command to fetch a thrown ball , rather than run after it as soon as you have thrown it . Yep! Great idea ! But no information given on how to do that.

Written by a leading expert
This is an excellent book on training border collies. I have read the book several times and keep going over parts that are proving difficult for my 7 month old collie to adhere to. I have had a border collie previous and know how it can be difficult to correct wrong behaviour. This book guides you along, but you shouldn't expect amazing results straight away. It is perseverance that gets results. I don't read a chapter, go and apply it to my dog for one 10 minute training session and expect results, although this has happened with some of the simpler training aspects like sit and down commands. Lead training is proving more challenging. I have read this section over and over and applied repeatedly what the book says. After weeks of this, almost every day, (every time he goes out on the lead) he is starting to walk without pulling. Things don't happen overnight so if your dog isn't reacting how you want, go back to the book and keep up the training, as I did. I am starting to see some amazing results. It's a great feeling when your dog does what you want. This book is my guide, not a magic wand.

Has really helped
Excellent well written book. Has helped already with my stubborn and fabulous Collie. Interesting section on the history of the breed and their traits, useful tips from the author who clearly has a huge amount of experience and love for this wonderful breed.

Where are the training advice?
The title of this book is misleading.I hoped to get help how to train my Border Collie Puppy, instead a lot of information what I should avoid without advice how to do it right in the first place. The two stars are for the lead training and teaching to recall. I really hoped to find more loving, living and learning lessons.

Very good
It exceeded my expectations. Provides 360-degree information. Some may even be superfluous for the various reasons you may be looking for this book, but still interesting to know. Furthermore, there is a division into chapters which can help to focus directly on the subject concerned. Nice, happy to have him with me.It is not boring to read!!!!
