The classic children's series with over 2 million copies sold. Let the rumbling cable car tell you the story! And what a story: From the crookedest street in the world to the Peking ducks in Chinatown, San Francisco is easily one of the world's most enchanting cities. Illustrator Miroslav Sasek captures both the breathtaking landscape and the cosmopolitan flavor of the City by the Bay in This is San Francisco. First published in 1962, Sasek's jaunty, colorful illustrations will still dazzle kids and adults alike. Review: A window in time with great graphics - not just for kids - Just delightful! Yes, it's several decades old with a few new updates, but it manages to convey the sense of "This is new! This is exciting!" of someone visiting San Francisco for the first time in 1962. This is true of many of M. Sasek's other books, though some of the later ones lack the fun of the earlier MCM graphics. I also recommend his Rome, Paris, Munich, and Way to the Moon. They are probably best suited for ages 6 and up, but adults love them, too. Review: lovely illustrations - a wonderful childrens book, interesting to adults as well, its fun to read and identify all the sites. The quality of the paper is nice, similar to the original one. I own a couple of the books from the first edition and the new edition is quite good, the san francisco now page, mentions some the changes since the book was written and is a nice addition. Good Quality, glad they decided to re-edit them. looking forward to completing my collection I recommend them for 4+ years old, a wonderful storytime book.

Delightful introduction to San Francisco for young travelers
We will be taking our children, aged three and one, to San Francisco for vacation this summer, and we bought this book to introduce them to the city. They love this book, and it is easy to see why. The illustrations, while fifty years old, have a freshness and vibrancy that has not dimmed with time. The text is a refreshing change from so many of the books we see for kids these days: it is informative and intelligent, while remaining fun and engrossing for the young reader/listener. Our three-year-old pleads with us to read the book to him over and over again. Highly recommended.

An all-time classic
This is a favorite of my family and myself. I have purchased a copy for my niece and my son to go along with the copy my parents still have from my youth. every home needs one! Having grown up in SF this remains a special reminder of the history of the place and the illustrations are marvelous. I don't know if individual prints from Sasek are available, but I'd love to get some framed from this book. If you've ever wanted a quick taste of a place, This is San Francisco is a great primer for any child.

Outstanding book to help kiddos apprecite their hometown
We love this classic! Its an outstanding book that has lovely "retro" feeling illustrations of all the major attractions in San Francisco. The author does a wonderful job depicting San Francisco scenes and capturing the feel of the city. There are lots of people & places to explore, and the details are fantastic. We didn't have any problems with the print quailty of our copy-- looks fantastic!

I thought she might like looking at the pictures in the book after driving ...
I gave this book to my granddaughter who is 3 while we were visiting San Francisco. I thought she might like looking at the pictures in the book after driving over the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting the tea garden, riding on the cable cars, etc. However even though she is a book lover, the pictures in this book did not seem to interest her. I thought the book was great but I especially like the vintage feel of the pictures which clearly appealed to the adults that saw the book rather than the kids.

another informative entry in the sasek series
sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images and interesting facts. i also found this entry to be a lovely springboard of ideas on a recent trip to san francisco (the largest chinatown in the united states!). and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the city...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the city WAS as well as the present day differences. i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either san francisco, or simply in wonderful illustration.

We love San Francisco and this book beautifully highlights it all.
I love the way Sasek captures the city and all the iconic landmarks. I would love to frame the pages as a collection for the wall. This book is a great gift for anyone who's "left their heart in San Francisco" which I didn't fully understand until recent visits to the city and surrounding areas.
