does it check house current?

This is for DC current tests only which uses batteries such as boats , riding mowers and automobiles. It will do both 12 and 24 volt systems. Does not work with AC voltage or current in homes

Can you check for voltage by just holding the probe against a wire or do you have to pierce the insulation on the wire?

You have to pierce the wire. I suggest if you do, dab a bit of silicone sealant to the hole to keep out moisture and avoid corrosion. I would also suggest getting the back probe set to avoid piercing wires if that is a concern.

Does the colour of the tool refer to any differences?

The picture is the real color, and the product is taken in kind

Does this come with extension cable?

If you are working on trailers or the like you will need to purchase the extension. However the cord it comes with should be long (20FT) enough to work on any part of a car or light truck that you need to access.
