Be careful of dubbed vs subbed versions
Ok, so if you RENT this, you get the dubbed version instead of the original version in Spanish with subtitles. And the dub is AWFUL. Don't make the same mistake I did - once you hit play, you can't refund it. I rented it on my Roku device so I couldn't see the reviews warning of this. If you purchase it through a Shudder subscription, however, you get the correct, subbed version. It would be great if it would differentiate between the versions on the order screen.

POORLY DUBBED VERSION-NOT AS ADVERTISED
On screen, in a small rectangular box that appears next to the title of the film, it states SUBTITLED. This version is not subtitled, it is dubbed. Poorly dubbed at that. At first we attempted what was a train wreck. About 20 minutes in, we turned it off. Rented a properly subtitled version from our On Demand library, and were much happier. I would not recommend this version. It is sloppy and cheaply done. IMDB reviews were high and we wondered why Amazon reviews were noticeably different. The dubbing is the reason. It's horrible.

Really annoyed the English-Dubbing disclosed in the description for the movie ...
NOTE: This review is for the ENGLISH-DUBBED version only, not the movie itself, that is the only version available for rent on Amazon. This is such a shame, clearly I should have looked at the reviews prior to renting, but the film is dubbed in English, not subtitled. You miss a lot with a foreign film when it's a straight dub, really annoyed this isn't disclosed in the description for the movie prior to renting it or else I wouldn't have wasted my money.

IT'S DUBBED!!!
Went into this excited for the great foreign horror film i love but was instantly dismayed when the reported began speaking English instead of spanish While this is probably good news to most people the dubbing in this movie feels way too off. the subtitles don't match which is very distracting and to your off you can tell the original actors poured so much effort and passion into their roles it would be better to hear the original audio with subtitles because the dubbing is nothing but awful and distracting especially for most of the secondary characters. With dub it's almost as bad as the American remake "Quarantine"Make it obvious this is a Dub and not the original film on the item page to avoid confusion. Please add a subtitled option for an edit to 5 stars because I love this movie otherwise!

Misleading
Rec is a wonderful Spanish horror film. Don't get this. It's in English and not even available with Spanish audio. Totally misleading. Watched 30 seconds and tried to switch to the original audio and could not. If I wanted to watch Rec in Spanish, I would have watched its lesser English step-brother [Quarantine]. Both are great movies, but I didn't want to watch this movie with unnatural audio. The fact, you can't even consume this film in its native tongue is butchery. Apt for the Halloween season, I suppose.

How to do a cinema verite horror movie properly
I don't know why but foreign horror films have beautifully more layers than American ones- our horror films are so tied to specific tropes that even well-acted and well-directed ones seen pretty shallow on the surface. This is a fast-paced European horror film of quality; Manuela Velasco is captivating as the female lead, playing a host of a local TV reality, human interest late night show called While You Are Asleep. On this episode, she and her cameraman are doing a ride-along with a night shift firefighting crew, that is if they even get a call. They do and soon find themselves in a situation they can't cope with. I normally am not a fan of shaky camera footage- as almost everyone who has made found footage films post-the original Blair Witch have ruined the concept and run it into the ground- but [Rec] ties the reason for it into the plot seemlessly. Now. I'm not endorsing the sequels as I've not seen them yet, but if the same people are at the reins I'll take a chance on those, too. Foreign cinema continues to make American movies seem like unoriginal high school productions.

Pretty Good Found Footage
I've heard many say that this is one of the best found footage movies out there. While I kindly disagree, I did think it was pretty good. Fans of viral/zombie films will certainly enjoy this one more than I did. I'm not personally a huge fan of the genre. One of the things I will say is that towards the end I did find myself to be creeped out (that woman/thing was scary!) so if you're looking for a few scares I recommend giving this one a try!

Thrilling Movie about being trapped in with a Monster
Good horror movies are hard to find. But now there is one more good horror movie in the world. If you have an issue with it being in Spanish and having to read subtitles, get over it. AND DON'T WATCH THE AMERICAN VERSION. This one is much better. The shaky cam actually works and I never noticed it I was so engrossed. And this is coming from someone who LOATHES shaky cam. And it gives a good reason for your characters to stay even when anyone else would run. The main character is a reporter doing a puff peice on firefighters when they get called out to an old woman gone crazy and locked in her apartment. She wants her big break and this story just might be it. Its when they get sealed in by the health department when people get desperate. It does have a few cheap jump scares, but the ending just ozzes tension and horror, and raises the hairs on the back of your neck. It's pitch black, and there is something inhuman and dangerous in the room with them. You don't want to see anything, but you have to. If you love horror films, then check this one out. You may not absolutely love it, but you definitely won't hate it.

Very underrated horror film
When it comes to modern horror films, one of the last ones to really impress me was REC. The film is a great simple film that knows what it wants to do and does it extremely well. It was released in 2007 and was directed by a pair of directors, Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaze. The film sees us follow a news reporter Angela (Manuela Velasco) and her camera man Pablo (Pablo Rosso) as they spend the night documenting a local fire station. When the alarm bell ring, they follow the crew to a building that turns out is suffering from a serious viral outbreak. The building is locked down and sealed with our characters inside. Angela and Pablo document the outbreak as it destroys each person in the building. As a film, I thought that it was very well crafted. The lead characters are all very likable and the found footage style is done with perfection. One of the very few that has pulled it off, in my opinion. The tension found throughout the film never lets up and the sheer horror on the actor's faces creates for a wonderful mood. There are jump scares here and there, but the atmosphere comes first and foremost. It creates a feeling of dread in the viewer, just as horror movies should. Despite being an extremely dark bloody movie, this isn't a body horror film. Everything in the film happens for a reason and doesn't feel exploitative for a second. This version of the film was recently released through Arrow Video and looks great. The image is very clear, there's plenty of visual dynamics and lots of colour. It's a genuinely great looking film, I think. The bluray disc comes equipped with a boat load of extras, including two different versions of the film. The first is the original theatrical version, which is 24fps, 1080p and 78 minutes long. The second is the production version which is a little shorter, 1080i and runs at 25fps. The film comes with 2.0 and 5.1 sound. The surround is very subtle at first but quickly becomes terrifying and well used at the right moments. It's highly recommended. You also get new audio commentary tracks, archive commentaries from the films directors, the making of the movie, on set footage with the cast and crew and so much more.If you're looking for a great horror movie, this is one that I highly recommend picking up. I'm not sure why it's as expensive at is but I personally have grown use to spending a little extra for great copies of films. This film is tense, it's terrifying and considerably better than it's America remake. I couldn't recommend it more.

"..A VERY WELL MADE AND ORIGINAL HORROR.."
PLOT...A television film crew documenting the night shift of a Barcelona fire brigade get much more than they bargained for when they attend an apparently routine call out, upon arrival at an inner city apartment, the firefighters are viciously attacked by an elderly female occupant, who appears to be infected with some sort of viral infection. Before long the virus has taken hold of the entire building, trapped inside by the authorities the other remaining survivors find themselves pitched into a nightmare of unimaginable proportions.[REC] is the best of the best when it comes to found footage movies, released in 2007 its still a strong and fun and nasty little horror with a great story and a great cast, the movie starts out calm and innocent and over the course of the run time it gets gruesome and nightmarish for our cast and the audience who are dragged along for the ride, you really get into the action with some close up blood and scares which is all very cleverly captured through the cameraman's POV, its dark and there's screaming and all kinds of crazy stuff going on and its all done very well to induce fear and edge of your seat dread, I personally think its still a great movie even today, this new Arrow video Blu-ray looks great and hopefully the superior [REC] 2 will get the same treatment one day, make sure you check this out if your new to horror its a good place to start, and old fans alike will want this release. The Blu-ray picture looks great in HDPlenty of features if you love that sort of thingTheatrical version (78 mins) and production version (75 mins)New audio commentary, Archive commentary. The Making of [REC] archive featurette. Scary found footage stuff now on Arrow Video
I'm not a big fan of the found footage genre having only really enjoyed The Visit.I've heard many good things about REC though, so when I heard Arrow were re releasing on a feature packed Blu-ray I thought I would add it to my Arrow collection and give it a try.I found it to be highly entertaining, the young lady in the lead role did a splendid job of making the entire situation very believable.Gripping me from start to finish and genuinely terrifying us.Very impressed with my first Arrow purchase of the year. 10/10

11 out of 10 for atmosphere
This 2007 Spanish language [with English subtitles] science fiction horror features television reporter Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) and her unseen cameraman making a late night documentary at a fire-station when the crew has to respond to an emergency call from an apartment building. However, on arrival they find things are not quite what they seem and soon find themselves quarantined inside. It is told through in the ‘through the lens’ style as seen by the camera. This two disc version has disc 1 [which holds the film] open to a main menu featuring play, scene selection, set up [basically Spanish 5.1 or 2.0, with subtitles in English on/off] and further attractions [basically 4 film trailers]. The second disc holds the bonus material comprising the making of, promotional gallery, interview gallery, the cutting room, production notes and the discs own set up [basically subtitles on/off].The film starts off with a professional seeming interview filmed ‘through the lens’ that sets the tone for the film and a laid back pace which is continued on first arrival at the apartment complex but as the situation develops, so does the gradual tension. The acting and filming is excellent and the script, complete with lots of swearing, seems to fit the situation, giving a sense of realism as the bodies pile up. The interaction between inside and outside the building is handled well and realistically while the reactions of the participants -in the main shocked and subdued but growing more restless, seems to ring true. The gore and scares are evenly spread between periods of exploration and discovery so a good pace is maintained. Even though it’s subtitled, it’s still easy to follow and they do not interfere too much with the viewing. The film has been remade in an English version [Quarantine] which retains over 80% of the script, but that lacks the realism seen in this original and is far to jerky. Definitely a ***** [despite the subtitles] and comes highly recommended.

THE BEST HORROR FILM EVER !
Seriously.I have watched many, many horror films over the years.I liked "Blair witch","Saw","Hostel", French film "Them", "Vacancy", "Right at your door", "Eden lake" and few others that stayed in my mind. But with 'REC" I have found my prefect one.I have to tell you,I never liked zombie films,it's too old-school. With "REC" nothing is predictable. The suspense is incredible. You can feel like your are there. What is very rare with horror films the plot is a logical story that leads to an ending that gives you an explanation. Also it has a fantastic touch of European cinema, there are no cliches ,it's all fresh and raw and bloody scary(without much blood). It starts very slowly but it has an ending that emphasize the terror to the point that I had to close my eyes (and it never happen to me before). It doesn't feel like it takes ideas from other films or like s.thing you've seen before even with the recording camera style obviously repeated after famous Blair Which Project. It is much better then something like "Paranormal activity"(and I mean P.A. part 1).The way they created fear in REC,well, I have never seen anything like this. I recommended this films immediately to some friends who have a choosy taste when it comes to horror films and they all liked it the same as I did .I will never understand people who complain about subtitles, that's ingnorance. And how many subtitles you can get in a horror film anyway?:)I also have to say that 'REC' part 2 unfortunately is far from REC 1.Still worth watching if you don't have to pay for it because it has at least one absolutely brilliant scene(they should add it to REC 1 and make it epic:)
