Not quite what I was expecting
This was the book from which I learned to read, sitting on my grandpa's lap.THAT book disappeared after my grandmother died--maybe she gave it away. It taught me much of the content of Scripture, but it also helped me learn about pronouncing unfamiliar names (because of the diacritical marks). Those two are present in this edition, BUT I assumed the illustrations would be the same as well. I was disappointed. This should not reflect on the seller, of course. They couldn't read my mind.

a must have for kids & yourself
Great way to hear the whole narrative of the Bible. It's been written into a seamless, chronological story. Perfect reading for young children. A fantastic way for adults to get an incredible overview of the Scriptures. My wife uses it before she teaches OT at her Christian school.

Nice Book for the price
I ordered this Hurlbut's Story of the Bible book because my mother used to read to me from it when I was young. I inherited the book when she passed away, but it has disappeared. I wanted to read it to my granddaughter when she stays with us. It is a newer edition than what my mom had, but has the same storied in it.

Annotated Kindle version is unreadable-formatting terrible
This review is onlyHurlbut's Story of the Bible - Jesse Lyman Hurlbut [First edition] (Annotated) for the "First Edition Annotated" Kindle version sold for $2.99 The 1 star is for formatting, not content. This Kindle version is basically unreadable, the formatting is so terrible. Do not purchase this edition! A friend of mine purchased another Kindle version and she has no complaints.

Not just for children
I've got a PhD and sometimes write on theology, but that doesn't mean I know the stories of the Bible as well as did the average 19th-century Christian. By reading this excellent edition of a timeless classic for 15 minutes every day, I may reach that level. I will be recommending it to my college-level literature students

This Bible Is Not Just for Children
Please note that this isn't a book of disconnected bible stories. It's a chronology "For Young and Old." Even though I'm on the "Old" side, before I read this book I still couldn't fit together what happened when. This book helped.I also thought the asides were charming. Questions like "Now, does this remind you of another good shepherd?" made me imagine that I was a child sitting on a beloved grandparent's knee and hearing the stories for the first time.(I first bought a copy of the print edition for a youngster I knew. I read it myself to be sure it suited him. I ended up liking it so much that I bought the Kindle edition for myself.)

A Good Investment
This book formed a strong and good childhood memory. I have reviewed many Bible story books since, never found one I liked better.

great Bible History
I have found this to be an excellent tool in teaching Bible history. The stories are all in chronological order so you are not just skipping around picking out a story from wherever. It gives you a great view of how the Old Testament and the New Testament compliment each other. You can see where stories you learned as a kid fit in and why among the history of the Israelites.
