I would recommend it, a great read
I am not yet through the book, however, at three quarters of the way through, I am very impressed and once I am done I will return to update this review. In the meantime, to add a bit of background, I have a forensic psychology degree, a masters of science, and I find the integration between the two fields smooth and considerate of one another as well. I am only now refining my theological foundation and therefore, cannot comment on the religious accuracy except from a layman's perspective and what little I have cross referenced as accurate (so far so good). Easy to read and comprehend and offers a greater latitude to the traditional counseling paradigm. It arrived on time, as described by Amazon & manufacturer, the packaging was undamaged, and the product itself was unmolested and made with quality materials.

A Good Resource
Competent Christian Couseling is an excellent resource book for biblical counselors of all types, be it: pastors, lay counselors, clinical, or private sector counselors. However, the book reads more like a compilation of articles and insights that a person can find in Psychology Today, or other counseling magazines. Although it is put together nicely, and it can be very useful in practical application, I feel it does not reach the potential that it can reach.Students will find this work helpful in their pursuit of a counseling major, although, they may not refer to it much once they are in their own practice.Overall, the work is good and worth the money and study, but it was not what I had expected.

Wonderful Book
This is a really well-written book. I have just begun reading it for a college course, and I'm already finding myself in concurrence with what it has to say. I feel it would be an excellent resource for someone who would like to learn about how Christian Counseling works and what it is all about, and it is also an resource for learning how to counsel in a Christ-centered, Biblically based manner. I am looking forward to reading the entire book. It is refreshing to read a book that emphasizes the same things I do when it comes to what one needs to prioritize when counseling.

If you are an Evangelical Baptist than this is your book
I am in the counseling program, LPC, and this is a required, somewhat, read.If you are evangelical than this is the book for you. There are some excellent points made. Yet, I was put off by the bias or should I say bigoted lean.If you think all homosexuals are an abomination and "perhaps" need change therapy,...um wow!... this is your book! I am straight and still shaken up by the absolutism within this book.I may revisit this review in the future to give more specific examples. Thanks

A Little Heavy But A Wealth of Information
I found this a little on the heavy side and written more for those with some background in the subject already. It still has a wealth of information but is on the dryer more academic side. Good resource that will be use in the future but not my go to book for reference.

Competent Counseling
This book provides very useful information for the christian counselor. It provides great insight for understanding people, problem development and intervention strategies. I am in the begining stages of my personal development in Christian counseling and the knowledge and biblical applications that the author provides are both interesting and helpful. This book contains a lot of information however if you read the chapters that supports your interest in this field of counseling, you will be enlighten and encouraged as you prepare to assist people God may send to you for help.
