These dies are very cute and cut well without need for a metal shim. I was cutting 65lb cardstock and added a panel from a cereal box between the cutting plate and the cardstock. It was a tight fit, but I have a manual machine. (I have a Big Shot plus but I mostly use plates for regular Big Shot machine.) This technique deeply embosses the cardboard shim. My plates may warp from the extra pressure but they aren't etched. When my cutting plates warp, I straighten them by placing them hump up in a tempered glass 9x13 baking dish with an inch of boiling water and a saucepan full of boiling water right on top of the middle of the submerged plate. This is enough heat and pressure to straighten the plate overnight.
