Needs to be proofread better -- there were typos and words that were hyphenated in the middle of a line for no reason. Very interesting story, but sad. I felt a contrast between the hopelessness and sense of doom Hannah and her mother felt and their intelligence and financial stability that might have allowed them to fulfill that dream of making it to the US. Most of the characters were clearly and well defined, but something was lacking as to the description of Hannah's brother, Gustav, and his son, Louis. How did it affect Gustav to marry another Jewish woman, whose family situation was similar to his, and how were they affected by the Cuban Revolution in such a different way than Hannah and her mother? How did Hannah and her mother manage to keep the house after the Revolution, and live without working? How did living in Cuba affect their personalities after living in Berlin and why didn't they ever make it to NY? What were the repercussions for Captain Gustav and the crew of the Saint Louis for being kind and humane to their Jewish passengers? What was the rest of his life like? So many questions, which may some day be answered in a sequel. I couldn't put the book down while reading it.

Demasiado triste para mí, no pude terminarlo. Decidí leer algo más ligero, un libro sobre un asesino en serie que asesinó a 25 mujeres. Así es, un libro así me resulta mucho menos deprimente que esta novela y la historia que la rodea. Pero le di 5 estrellas porque está bellamente escrito, es conmovedor (según lo que leí) y te conmueve, te marca. Un logro literario, de verdad. Pero, como dije, para mí era insoportablemente triste.

Esta novela es uno de los mejores que he leído. Nos cuenta la historia de una familia de judíos en Alemania durante el tiempo de Hitler. Nos oímos la cuenta de la perspectiva de Hannah, una niña de doce años, que no entiende porque la sociedad y sus vecinos la consideran impura. Su familia embarca en un viaje hasta Cuba en el trasatlántico Saint Louis, buscando refugio en Cuba y, al final, pasaje a EEUU. Setenta y cinco años más tarde, Anna, otra niña de doce años, una descendiente de la familia alemana, que ha perdida su padre en otra tragedia, busca sus raíces, y quiere entender de donde viene. Viaja a Cuba con su madre para encontrarse con la misma Hannah, la niña de Alemania, ahora convertida en anciana, y quien es la tía abuela de Anna. Este libro es muy buen escrito, emocionante, y relevante a eventos de hoy en día, con los muchos refugios que huyen de violencia y buscan vida mejor en otro país. El libro es ficción, pero la historia del Saint Louis realmente ocurrió. El autor ha investigado este viaje histórico y además mucha de la historia y política de Cuba, y sus lectores van a aprender mucho de esta novela.

A moving story of 5 generations struggling with their Jewish identity in a world they do not understand, with J stamped in the German passports of Jews, and "j" the Spanish pronunciation of Hannah, the prewar adolescent, that finally falls away from Anna, her present day great niece, against the real life background history of the Saint Louis ship and the 900 refugees refused by Cuba, the US State Department and Canada, most of whom would eventually be murdered by the Germans and their European collaborators.

The story of the refugee Jews fleeing Nazi persecution in 1939 is a sad piece of history unknown to me. 928 of them took passage on a steamer from Hamburg to Habana with visas to enter the country. Except for a few, the main characters in the novel, all were denied entry by the Cuban government and the U.S. and Canadian governments as well and returned to Europe. The story turns on the lives of the German girl who in her 80's reaches out to a young girl in New York who is her niece. They unite in Cuba in 2014. There are several circumstances in the story that needed explanation that was lacking. Also, almost no comment on what part Jewish faith traditions might have played during the flight and during the refugee family's unhappy resettlement in Cuba.

Gracias por este libro tan interesante- La niña alemana, me encantó. A pesar de que es un hecho triste, está escrito con mucho amor y esperanza. Lo recomiendo, no se arrepentirán de comprarlo.

Una novela que te atrapa de principio a fin.

It is a great history, since I started it took over all the book. It is just fantastic. I am going to read it again for sure.
