Nice unit and effective heater
I much prefer this bathroom heating option to the old fan heater we had installed in the ceiling. Two typical heat lamp bulbs use 500w, not the typical 1000-1500w of a fan heater. The small fan in this unit is not meant to "push" the heat down to the user so much as move some heat buildup out of the enclosure to keep things from overheating. Our old fan heater felt more "cooling" than "warming" since even warmer air blowing over damp skin creates an evaporative cooling effect. This does not...very pleasant heating. Easy to install in a typical rough opening for these ceiling units. This unit has an unattractive white plastic cover; I spray painted it with some "metallic" oil rub bronze spray paint to match our ORB fixtures and the result was quite nice. Since you can see up into the enclosure, which is stainless steel, I also spray painted the inside matte black high-heat stove paint which created a nicer look. In the summer I'll likely switch out the heat bulbs with standard bulbs (sockets are standard bulb size) for light without the heat. You can wire to a multi-switch to control either or socket, allowing a person to install a heat bulb in one and a standard light in the other and switch between the two.

Good Heat!!
I have had this installed in a 10'x10' bathroom in Pennsylvania for a month now. I wanted my bathroom warmer, but did not want a space heater sitting around, nor did I want to spend $$ on in floor heating. It works great and takes the chill off on cold mornings. I hate a cold bathroom. I mounted this in the middle of the ceiling where I stand to dry and shave. You have to understand that it primarily heats what it shines on as opposed to heating the whole room, although it does that somewhat with the door closed. There is also a small fan mounted in the housing that functions to keep the heat out of the housing and down below where it belongs. You cannot feel the air flow, that's not what it's for. The directions are very UNCLEAR as to whether this can touch attic insulation. I left it run for about 10 minutes, then climbed up in the attic and touched the housing which was cool to the touch. I covered mine up with the blown insulation and my house hasn't burned down yet :) I tried the one white/one red bulb combination. The white is WAY TOO BRIGHT . . . I think I fried a retina. I switched to both reds and it is much better. The 8 lights on the fixture above my sink more that wash out the red. If you have a single bulb bathroom light, you will see more red. I would highly recommend the TWO bulb fixture. I don't see how a single could put out enough heat. I run it for 5/10 minutes at a time and have not noticed any significant change in my electric bill.

"French fry" bathroom heating!
Had similar but much older version in our master bedroom. Bought this for kids bathroom. Works well, much more quiet than older model. The small amount of noise is from a small fan that gently 'pushes' the heat from lamps, downward. It's NOT a blower, which is nice actually. You feel the radiant heat and it's just aided by a small, lower-rpm fan. I don't know if it is required, but strongly recommend a timer switch be installed for this. Obviously don't want to waste that much electricity when not in room. Also, unit does get hot so safer with a timer switch on wall. Definitely warms entire bathroom. Could spends thousands on electric radiant heated flooring. Or, go with this. Even with a professional electrician, you're toasty for about $250 all in!

Works great, awful to install
It's a metal box with a fan and two sockets. Not much to it. Far better than putting heat lamps in regular can lights of course. But here the thing. Cutting a hole in the ceiling just right (there's no template) and then wedging this thing in there with it's supporting rails was awful. Truly difficult. Then, wiring it up was equally hard given the extremely minimal space between joists and the resulting access to the junction box. This is a fine product, but, suffers from the lack of a usability engineering refresh.

Works great
Mostly easy to install. Only issue was this model 163 has a red and black wire, which at first most people would consider 220v, but manual itself says you can use them at 110v together or keep left/right on separate switches. I put them together on 1 switch.Installed with 2 Westinghouse brand heater lamps (each 250w), and it's nice and toasty esp. for winter mornings.

Dont judge it till you get out of shower wet
Installed this in our bathroom as my wife is cold blooded and always shivering when getting out of shower. After we installed it and turned it on we felt like we had wasted our money as you could barely feel the heat. We didn't appreciate it till the next day when getting out of the shower wet, then you could really feel the heat. Now we love it gives just the right amount of heat to stop from being cold getting out of shower. If we move it would be the first improvement we will do to new home. It was money well spent

Just a little bit of fan noise but nice product
We put this in the ceiling of a renovated bathroom. The 500 watts of light and heat that it puts out with our choice of bulb actually do feel like standing in strong sunlight and the warmth is very nice especially in winter. The only con is the cooling fan that runs is just a little bit of extra background noise.

Could Not Be More Pleased!
First off, it took my electrician less than 45 minutes to install including ceiling prep, wiring and everything. The warmth generated by this product is just perfect. I recommend it to anyone thinking about or in need of a quality heat lamp.

Nice Heater - Makes winter nicer
I installed one of those in my garage over my work table and it creates nice warmth. I installed 2 GE 250W infrared heat lamps in it and it works wonders.Make sure you buy a good timer for it.
