Ortho Home Defense Insect Killer Granules₃, Ready to Use Outdoor Granules, for Ants, Spiders and More, 2.5 lbs.

Arrived on time in good condition but bottle is surprisingly only half-filled. The granules seem to work most of the time but seem to loose their effectiveness after month or so, contrary to the labeling. I basically use a whole bottle for 1 application around our 2,000 Sq Ft home which has a roughly 30 x 100 foot perimeter - that's under 3o0 linear feet, laying a path about 6 inches wide. As with all such products, rain will either wash them away or reduce their effectiveness by washing out the poisons (only guessing here). We use the granules in conjunction with the sprayed versions of the same product due the sturdy and prevalent carpenter ants that attack our home relentlessly throughout the year (except winter). The granules seem to last through a couple of lighter rains before flushed away. Our application technique is to ONLY lay down granules when: (1) ants are present (2) rains are not expected for a week or more. This allows the ants to carry the find and carry granules back to their nests. At the same time, we also liberally spray around the entire perimeter of our home with the spray version of the product. We spray: (1) Under lower edge of lowest clapboards (where carpenter ants enter to feast on our home) (2) all along the ground where the foundation meets the earth (3) around the lower edges of all lower windows, doors, etc. It's a never ending battle but we seem to stop them with these products - or perhaps they've all retired, frolicking in nests throughout our home! Since they are plentiful before application and completely absent in the next 2 weeks, we suspect the treatments are working. Complaint #1: Our major complaint is how empty the bottle is. It feels and looks 1/2 or less full. Perhaps they sell by weight, the granules are heavy, and they used a standardized bottle size resulting in the appearance of it being short. I'll weigh the next bottle to ensure it's as labelled. Complaint #2: Our other complaint is that for the price, you really only get *one* effective application. For $19 that's an expensive application. By contrast, the spray bottles provide us with at least about 1.5-2.0 applications for less money. So, they go a bit longer and cost a bit less. We buy both formats of product to create an offense on 2 fronts to maximize effectiveness. We'll sometimes use a 3rd different product form a different company with different active ingredients increase the modes of attack. In our exurban location west of Boston with lots of trees around, we have to treat our house about 4 times per summer.

The Ortho Ant and Insect Killer is a fast-action and efficient solution towards killing insects. I had (past tense now) a massive ant invasion in my basement's boiler and hot water heater room for the past few weeks that grew worse over time. The ants dug up holes and mounds of sand first by the hot water heater, then the boiler. They were having a party convention of sorts! I purchased the Ortho (granular version) last week, and it arrived yesterday. I immediately applied a portion towards the hot water heater first, within a half-hour, a motherload of ants, now including the queen ants with the wings, started coming up from the holes and sand running around berserk! I applied a lot more Orthro to the sand areas. Within one hour, all the ants were dead, except a few stragglers. I understand that this product is intended for outdoors, but you may need to wear a mask when around this product if you have indoor basement insects as I did. The collective smell of this product is not for the human respiratory system. Check out my video for evidence that if you have ant and insect problems, this is the product to get!

Normally when I use something like this, I can't really *see* how well it works because it's more of a background type of application or something that keeps bugs away and I just hope that it works. That is not the case with this Ortho product. I spread a line around my entire house (dirt, grass, and concrete) because I live in the middle of a farm field and the bugs are rampant. So, I was shocked that 2 days later when I looked down at the driveway in front of my garage door that there was a line of dead beetles. This stuff works for real. I wasn't too thrilled about having so many dead bugs at my door, but they weren't coming inside, so it's a win. I did wait a to clean up the bugs because I didn't want to risk sweeping away the rest of the granules. Although, I'm sure it didn't stop every bug from entering my house, I will for sure buy this again, because I know that it worked enough to stop a lot of them.

I was a little disappointed in the product because some of the target bugs I was after, did not seem to be affected. However, they weren't listed on bag so I guess I need to have multiple insect killer products. I sprinkled this heavily in 5-gallon planters that became infested with gnats / fruit flies after I transplanted an infected peat pot from walmart, and the gnats are still living life large. I also had hoped / expected this to control snails & grubs that might snack on my flowerbed plants, but no, I still see fresh damage every day. So if you want to control ticks & spiders I guess, this is probably the bomb. I should have paid more attention to the microscopic writing on the label.

Surprised at how well this product works. Was having ants all over but most concerned with my kid's room alongside window and getting in daughter's bed. Didn't have time to spray inside but used this product for outside. Was skeptical but have not had a single ant problem since. I had enough to do entire exterior of home and it has made a huge significant difference. We live in a rental home and it was obvious it had not been sprayed for bugs in a while. This product works and we have had a minimal bug problem, no ants. The ants made an appearance in our garage after our dog's food. Used what was left in between cracks where they were burrowing up. Haven't seen any since. Product says it's good for up to 3 months. Wished it was longer but thankful that it does work
