Such an incredibly brilliant work, for such vast knowledge and yet what a tragedy that almost nobody knows the name Alfred Edersheim, or knows of this book. His two volume masterpiece, The Life and Time of Jesus the Messiah is unknown as well as his other book about the Jewish Temple at the time of Christ. Such incredible insights and such amazing facts of Jewish life at the time of Christ. After reading this, you have memories of events in Jesus life and ancient Palestine as if you were there.

This book is obviously a translation, and has lost some of the logic and flow of ideas and words in the process. However, the content is outstanding, and if your willing to wade through the clumsy verbiage you will be rewarded. Anyone who is interested in understanding the context of Scripture and 1st century Jewish culture will benefit greatly from this very detailed accounting.

Who knew, unless you grew up back then, how it was to live centuries ago, or if your SS teacher or Hebrew teacher taught it to you!This book is excellent! It explains the day-to-day life during the time Jesus was growing up: how to dress, catch food, eat, sew, cook, raise animals, sleep, the social life, the synagogue life, you name it...it's all in this book.What a gem! A real wealth of information that you don't find in all the study books. The closest you will find is if you own a Bible History book and even then it won't explain all this to you.

Wonderful look into Jewish life in Palestine during Jesus’ lifetime. Husband bought it as a gift for me, thinking it would contains actual sketches (pictures.) Author ‘paints in words’ the sketches. It is written in a very old style and could really use editing and cross referencing with a table of contents listing each chapter title and an index at the end citing topics and/or sources and scripture references. However, it is a unique look into Jewish life in Palestine handed down from a man raised in a culture that held many of the same values for millennia (and now I’m almost sounding like the author...)

I have Other Copies of this but went with price for a gift Large copy but look at the preview of the inside . The test is like single space margin to Margin 8 inches wide After a Page or 2 you are ready to put it down . Mateial Content is Great but this format I would not buy again Looking for another "More Readable" copy

As a Sunday School teacher, I find it necessary to keep a number of reference books and materials. This is a most valuable volume to have available while teaching throigh the Gospels.

It is impossible to understand the Bible without knowledge of the customs and culture of the time which is written of. This is the go to book for understanding Betrothal, The wedding ceremony, The burial customs and so much more. No Christian library is complete without a copy of this tome.

I like the content but strange format and disappointed no illustrations.

At times the writer produces images, ideas, that reveal an explanation of some New Testament incident that appears vague or difficult to understand. It’s as if the penny has dropped, and a ray of light has shone. Some delightful surprises.

Absolutely fascinating. Gives an enlightening window on the historical lifestyle of the Holy Land.

This book is an invaluable study book written before the start of the 1900s. Customs and country and government had not been contaminated by modern living . This is an excellent book for believing Christians to prepare sermons and bible studies.
