Not what they used to be!
While I was hopeful that these new style protector pads by Naturepedic would perform as well as the older versions of this product, I am sad to report that both of the pads that I purchased through Amazon two months ago have leaked on multiple occasions. The only reason we did not lose our mattresses when they leaked was because I was skeptical of the pads, so I put multiple waterproof layers down on the beds while we were trying them out. I will no longer use these pads. And I would like to return them, but I will have to go through Naturepedic because my Amazon return window is now closed. For reference, I own two Naturepedic Organic Waterproof protector pads WITH STRAPS which are not fitted on the sides and are made of a heavier "canvas" type material surrounding the waterproof barrier. They were purchased in 2012 and 2015, one from amazon and one from another supplier. Both are completely waterproof, and I am very disappointed that they are no longer available.

Happy customer, now.
EDIT: so after a few months of disappointment, the manufacturer reached out to me via email, I was a bit weary as they said I had gotten a cover from a batch of faulty sheets. But they offered to replace the sheet, no cost to me. Who was I to say no right? So I took them up on the offer. Fast forward, we tested the sheet when we recieved it before putting it on the bed and it didn't leak so we gave it a second try. It kept our daughters bed dry when she had an accident, we are more than happy with the product even after the bumpy start. For the premium price that was paid, I was originally very disappointed as seen below. We are very happy with this product now, and appreciate the patience and time this company took to right the wrong. We bought this when we bought the naturpedic twin mattress for our daughter. We were super excited at how soft and quiet the mattress cover was, not like the others we tried that were plastic and crinkled. In hind sight, this should have been a warning. As the first time our daughter had an accident it soaked directly through the pad and left a stain on the mattress. Kids have accidents right, it's what they do, this was with a week of starting to use the pad. We washed it per instructions, I even let it air dry and didn't use the dryer even though it said I could.Very disappointed in the product. Ended up buying a mattress pad from bed bath and beyond for 39 bucks and putting this one over that one so it was at least quieter.

it is polyurethane and smells strong like a new Ikea memory foam cushion
I think I'm going to return this. They don't list the waterproofing materials anywhere, not even on their website. They only list the products with food grade polyethylene so I thought the waterproof layer would also be polyethylene. It is not, it is polyurethane and smells strong like a new Ikea memory foam cushion. I emailed the company and they said that it is medical grade polyurethane - so why only list polyethylene on their website? For the price, I would expect better. I considered washing it a lot before use but because of the price, and the companies promise of clean products I won't. I might as well buy a less expensive cover or the $40, 100% polyethylene cover I have found from another company. I have bought a crib mattress and 2 mattress pads from this company and they did not smell. The mattress has a polyethylene cover. Their full "100% organic cotton" mattress pad is really nice, but they don't list the polyester filling. I'm sick companies leaving out half of the materials on their product listing or just saying "imported" if it is made in China. This is the only Naturepedic product I have returned.

Really works but loose fit
I've had other mattress pads lose their waterproofing ability over time--I've never been sure why, as there were no visible tears or other reasons; perhaps it was from repeated washing? After 2 months, and 3-6 washings a week, this one has remained completely waterproof. I hope this continues! What I don't like is the fit. I have a "regular" depth mattress--nothing too deep--so there is a lot of extra material on the sides. No problem with that--I know a lot of covers & fitted sheets are cut that way to accommodate varied mattress depths. But it's also too loose on top, the flat part, and this interferes with the fit and look of the fitted sheet. That's why I only give it four stars. Also, be aware that it takes a long time to dry in the dryer.

Might need some extra protection
Update: I was very pleasantly surprised that Naturapedic reached out and sent me a brand new mattress to replace the damaged one (even though it was a different brand). They also sent me replacement mattress covers, which I now have doubles on each of my kids mattress and it does the trick protecting the mattress. Very good customer serviceI'm pretty mad that an $800 natural mattress that I bought is ruined because there is nothing waterproof about this mattress pad at all. It's no more water proof than a blanket. So glad I spent $100 on a mattress pad that is not waterproof at all.

Great Non-toxic Mattress Cover for Potty Training Children
My son has only had one accident since we purchased the Naturepedic mattress protector, but this completely blocked the urine from soaking into his new (expensive) mattress. So it did the job well, AND it doesn't have a bad crinkly sound when he sleeps. It did add a little more crinkle then the foam mattress by itself, but very slight, so as to be barely noticeable. I'm quite pleased. Especially since I know that our son isn't being exposed to harmful toxins. We invested in a non-toxic bed, and it hurt to spend another $100 or so on a mattress cover, but at the same time, it was totally worth it.We have washed this mattress protector and so far it has held up well. I'm very satisfied.
