A fitting documentation of the work of one of the world's leading bridge engineers
Christian Menn is among the leading bridge engineers of the past century, and this book documents his contributions by presenting a sample of many of his designs. The photographs are of very high quality, and capture not only the beauty of the bridges, but also the absolutely breathtaking sites in which most of the bridges are situated. Beware, the photos may make you want to move to Switzerland! The book also includes several insightful essays and interviews related to Menn and bridge design in general.Menn's ability and inclination to synthesize keen artistic sense and deep technical prowess is quite uncommon, and serves as a model for all bridge engineers who are passionate about their profession. Menn's design philosophy isn't far from the idea that 'form follows function', and that such form will naturally be beautiful without needing or wanting artificial adornment. Of course, more than one form will usually work well for a site, so it takes insight and creativity to generate alternative forms, and judgment to choose among them.I'm very glad that this book was produced while Menn is still with us and able to work on it (he will be 90 next year). I highly recommend it to all structural engineers (especially bridge engineers), as well as architects and lay readers who have an appreciation for structural beauty.
