Velvet Was the Night

Gothic Mexican theme.
Interesting story. Plot is woven together well, but a bit predictable as to telegraphing eventual outcome. Would not read twice. Would not buy again.

This is a wonderful romance adventure story set in the background of violent Mexican politics
A very human well written story. Talks of how real people struggle to get along and find a way to get by in real life non-ideal circumstances. Wondrous relationships

Too much obscenities, violence and sex as well as confusing
I love Silvia Moreno-Garcia and have read most of her books. This novel, an intimate view of the Dirty Mexican War is Mexico City in the 1970’s, is descriptive, with the last 80 pages being exciting. However, I didn’t like any of the characters and there was too much bad language, graphic sex and violence for my taste. I suppose, however, that the author is showing the corruptness and vicious nature of the persons involved in the uprising.Moreno-Garcia’s viewpoints of the students vs. the government forces is interesting, yet I was confused having to try to figure out who the bad guys were vs. who the good guys were. Also, the acronyms used had to be researched while reading. In a future printing, perhaps the author can rearrange the Epilogue to be the Preface and expand on the backfield of the conflict.
