Too fragile
Wearing my custom, but the cable is too fragile

Not durable and cheap construction
Originally purchase in 2020 so this is an updated review.I bougth this unit as a replacement for the original breathing emulator that came with the Rubies/Disney costume. That unit failed the following Halloween. It failed in much the same way as described below.Darth has been in storage for a couple of years. My plan was to revive him this Halloween. But there was a problem. The breathing device failed. Just like the original Rubies/Disney unit this one was never very loud. It was simply adequite. But without this effect the costume itself is just lame. I had high hopes this unit being newer would be better. It wasn't. In fact, the breathing sound was never very loud at all. It was just ok. And, just like the original it also lasted one Halloween.Just like the original, when this unit failed it was barely audible. And when you pressed the button to activate the breathing sound it just popped and cracked. So, thinking it may be dead batteries I opened the access panel. Opening the case I discovered that the two AAA batteries were fine. However, there are two LR44 button batteries in a side housing. When I saw visible corrosion outside the housing I took them out and replaced them. After replacing the batteries nothing changed. Not taking the risk of purchasing another one.

Physical quality could be better.
Provided it arrives in shape, i recommend hot gluing the cords in place as they are not connected very securely. That being said, the audio quality is okay. Its definitely not what it should be but it gets the job done. You have to press and hold the button the whole time or the sound cuts off, which kind of sucks. The cord is long though, and you can easily string it through your sleeve from your mask to your glove for control. Not as bad as the other reviews make it out to be but definitely could be better.

Provides some much needed humor relief
Great value and when used with my COVID 19 protection face mask provided some much needed humor relief for others during a really stressful and serious situation.

Most of what you expect, hard to stick
This is a simple product, with simple functionality, and simple application. So long as the buyer reads what the product does, if ordered, they should receive just as expected. The speaker is small and light-weight. Therefore, deep tones should not be expected. That aside, if you're looking for a vader breath, you've found it. You do have to hold down the button throughout the whole breath and then repress the button to repeat the process. I would have preferred to press the button quickly, getting the whole breath. THE BREATHING SOUND DOES NOT LOOPI also have an issue with the lack of thought put into the amount of adhesive. What is supplied is strong but only covers about 5% of the unit. Most, if not all, vader masks have slotted sections around the mouth. This means less mask surface for adhesive to stick to. With the combination of little of the unit being stuck to and little surface of the mask to stick to, the unit doesn't stay. And having it stay in place is important when you are trying to fit it in the small space between your lips and the mask. The slight oddity of function and the lack of adhesive are why I took off 1 star.

Pretty marginal...sound not very good and poorly implemented
I bought this sound effects device to go with my Darth Vader helmet which I bought from the same seller at the same time. I did not expect "movie quality" sound from it, but overall I was still disappointed with the product. This product is comprised of two parts connected by a long, thin wire (which cannot be disconnected). The battery and the button that causes the sound to be made is on one of the two parts, and the other part is a small plastic box that has a small speaker inside; this speaker box has a piece of adhesive on it (with a peel-off strip to expose the adhesive) which is supposed to hold the speaker inside the mask near the mouth opening. I found the adhesive to be too weak, and the speaker always fell out. With the long cable, the other part is supposed to be routed down the neck of the mask, inside the costume, and located somewhere that the wearer can press the button to make the sound. I wish this had been wireless, since with the wire if you need to take the helmet off, you cannot do so with the cable routed through the rest of the costume. For example, if you are driving to a costume party and need to arrive 'in costume', you can't drive with the helmet on, and so trying to route the whole apparatus can be a hassle. A wireless version would have only cost a few bucks more and would have been much more useful. The sound that is made is simply a sequence of one hissy breath in and out. This happens each time you press the button. At least on mine, the sound stops as soon as I release the button, so I can interrupt the sound before sequence is complete. My sound maker worked the first few times I tried it upon opening the package. Then of course it failed to work the first time I tried using it when I wore the whole costume. Nothing I did at the party would get it working again, including replacing the two batteries. When I got home, I opened the case of the main part (with the battery and button) and probed around inside with my multimeter. I learned that hidden inside the case are two small button cells that are glued in place and are not easily replaceable. These are there so the product will work for testing by potential customers when the product is inside its package in a store (there is even a sticker saying "press here to hear the sound". Since the product does not come with the main batteries, these button cells are necessary to provide power for this pre-sales testing. However, on mine the contacts for the main batteries were not manufactured correctly, and were not making connection. So when I first tried mine out, even though I had installed the main batteries, the product was actually working from the button cells and by the time I really wanted it to work those cells were dead. The type of mis-manufacturing I observed is likely to occur on more than just my own device, so I will share what I did to fix it. The main battery consists of two alkaline cells (as I write this I forget if they are AA or AAA). There are coil springs to make contact with the two ends of the series cells, but where the two cells meet in the middle there is just a metal plate to make contact (this is a completely normal way of doing it in many products). However, this plate has raised bumps in the spots where contact with the cells is to be made, and on mine the bumps are not big enough to actually touch the battery cells....there is an almost invisible gap between plate and cells. My fix was to grab the plate with a set of small pliers and pull it out of the plastic case. Then I placed the plate over the hold in a nut (as in a nut that goes with a screw or bolt), and used a large nail and hammer to pound the small bump into a bigger bump. After replacing the plate, good contact was made and the product started to work. While I had the case open, I also cut the wires coming from the built-in button cells, since they effectively place the button cells across the main battery, and this is likely to drain the main battery if the button cells are drained.Regarding the quality of sound coming from this product, you can tell what it is supposed to be when in context of the helmet, but just my itself it does not really sound all that much like Darth Vader's breathing.Overall, not that good of a product. It could have been much better with a bit of effort and better implementation and quality control, and for not much more money

RIDICULOUS FUN
OMG This was so much fun. My kids about fell out of their chair when I rounded the corner wearing the Vader mask with the sound emanating from it. You can tape it into place even in one of the Target/WalMart-bought kids masks & it isn't very cumbersome. Great product.

Waste of money.
Complete garbage. Worked ONCE. When we first received it. And it sounded like a vacuum cleaner, not that good but we just thought we'd use it for a costume party a few weeks later. Then we took it out the night we dressed up and it didn't work! Tried different batteries and still didn't work. Don't bother!

Top
