My guess would be Fashionable Aubergine wine.

Do you need this specific Essie top coat or will any do for the Gel Couture line? will this work as a stand-alone polish?

I have never worn this polish without the top coat but I have applied the top coat after a delay. . .I think it would chip easily - but so does any polish. I also use Sally Hansen gel and I am sure they are interchangeable. Either way I love the Essie Couture line.

Is the color "Closing Night" a gray or blue color? Hard to tell

I found it to be more of a blue hue, the kind of blue that had a grey tone in it; kind of like weathered denim. It's very flattering on both nails and toes and I am wearing it with dressy and casual clothes, alike. This shade is my favorite as it's just different enough. Plus this gel polish stays on the longest of any I've tried. Enjoy!
