desertcart.com: The Unbelievable Gwenpool 1: Believe It: 9781302901769: Hastings, Chris, Gurihiru, Beyruth, Danilo, Bonvillain, Travis: Books Review: Gwenpool is a wonderful read - It's funny and heartfelt and can give you emotional whiplash. She's got a refreshing style and attitude. The art is great and Gwen is so cheerful about things and ... just... you gotta read it to see. Gwenpool is only tangentially related to Deadpool, like in the conceptual phase it was "what if Gwen Stacy... was Deadpool?" but she's her own thing. Like Deadpool she knows she's in a comic, because she's from the "real" world, but unlike Deadpool she can't break the 4th wall as it were. Where Deadpool might turn to the camera (or otherwise the audience) and talk to the reader, she would just turn in some random direction and say those things because she doesn't know where the camera is. She gets a costume and becomes a "main character" because that's how you get plot armor, and figures that if she doesn't know about an alien then it was made up for her to fight. That sort of stuff. I found out after buying this that my library has it too. Heh, oh well, I love owning it. I'm gonna loan it to my friends to make them read it too. Gwenpool isn't very explicit or graphic with it's violence, but she is VERY irresponsible. I would give it a PG13 rating, and wouldn't let kids under 8 read it... but that's just me. If you have similar concerns I highly recommend you buy this and read it yourself to be your own judge (and because you'll enjoy it). And if you think you want to give your kids a better role model, I can recommend Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Review: A Hidden Gem - When I first saw the cover and title of this series I honestly thought it was going to be another one of those horrible overly hip comics Marvel has been trying to market to non-comic fans as of recent. This isn't a comic I normally would have bothered reading, but i picked it up because i was recommended it by a friend, and man am I glad i did. This turned out to be a joyously colorful and hilarious title in the vein of series such as Deadpool and Harley Quinn. Its honestly a shame that this came out at the time that it did because its a gem that is just getting buried under the tons of garbage titles like Squirrel Girl that Marvel has been spamming out over the last few years. This title deserves a lot more attention.

A quirky, genre-savvy heroine.
Not knowing some of the lore behind a few of the characters Gwen encounters, I was a little lost. That said, the art and humour were pretty good, and the stories were fun to read. The art style tends to bounce between a realistic style and a cartoony, vaguely manga-ish style. Honestly, while both styles were pretty good in their own ways, I preferred the more cartoonish style. It fit the tone of the story and character a lot better and was a lot cleaner and easier on my eyes. I'm a sucker for a genre-savvy character, and you can't get much more genre-savvy than a reader who was pulled in from "the real world". A pretty old trope, but Gwenpool makes it work. I rate this an 8/10. It's a short read, I demolished this book within a half-hour of pulling it out of the package, but I will probably read it again, and buy the other volumes.

The fourth wall is gone!
Purchased on accident, but ended up enjoying it quite a bit! The art did not really fit the tone of the book early on, but it got it together more than halfway through. I definitely recommend this if you are looking for a book even more meta than Deadpool, goofier than Deadpool and more guest stars than.. well... Deadpool.

Insert meta-commentary about reviews here
The official explanation is that Gwen Poole (a person in our world who has read a lot of comic books) is transported to the Marvel Universe, and buys a costume because she knows that in this universe you're way better off being a hero than a bystander. But it's really just an excuse to have a hyper character with a whole lot of genre savvy and insider knowledge play with the comic book tropes. Kind of like "Six Characters in Search of an Author" but for comic books. I don't know if it will age well, but this first volume was a lot of fun and I bought the second.

I have no idea what I just read, but my God it’s full of stars.
I have no idea what I just read, but my God it’s full of stars. Like a Sparklegoth, simultaneously glittery pink and dark as sin. Twee and ultraviolent. Meta and grounded. I have never read another comic quite like this, and look forward to what else is in store. Also Totoro art on the back with Gwenpool and MADOC? Not enough glitter hearts in the world for that.

Love it!
I first saw Gwenpool in West Coast Avengers, and I loved her character. So I bought her comics and I love them! She's such an goob and I love her for it. The artwork is gorgeous, and probably my favorite so far after Aja (but I may be bias...).

It is a fun read a little iffy at times regarding Gwenpool and her character if you can borrow it from someone do so it is not worth buying.

I'm an old guy in my mid-sixties. I've been reading DC and Marvel since I was able to read at all. And frankly I regard this (entire series, not just Vol 1) as THE most fun and clever graphic novel I've read in my life. The only thing that mars it is that one of the artists later in the story is... um... not so much too-Manga as just... not-too-good. And I think Marvel are ending the series, which is both unspeakably sad and unspeakably stupid. Gwenpool is one of the best things they've done. Ever. I wouldn't want to offend you (or who knows? Maybe I would - I'm a grumpy old man, after all), but if you don't like this series, there's probably something wrong with you, and you're either not a real fan, or you may have a psychiatric illness or brain disease. Or you're living in some universe that's even stupider than the one I'm stuck in. Look, just buy it, OK?
