Please Read Instructions (and look up definition of "siphon" if needed)

This is an excellent and durable product that works exactly as intended. It even comes with a handy net bag to keep all the parts in. Reviewers complaining that the product only works when pumping the bulb either have no idea of what a siphon is, or did not bother to read the simple and easy to understand instructions. Those needing additional information about siphons or this product, may wish to read some or all of the following::1) This is a SIPHON kit, not a pump. The only way any siphon works is for the liquid at the "delivery" end of the hose to be lower than the level of the liquid being transferred. If at any time the liquid at the delivery end of a siphon hose rises above the level of the liquid being siphoned, the siphon will break or the liquid will attempt to return back to the original container (reversing the siphon). This is true whether you use the bulb provided in this kit or any other means of pulling a vacuum to draw the liquid into the siphon hose to begin the siphon. It is important to understand that siphons flow all by themselves. If you were to fill the hose completely with liquid (no air bubbles) without the bulb on the hose at all, put a finger over each end of the hose, put one end into the liquid being transferred, took your finger off the end in the liquid being transferred, held the other end below the level of the liquid being transferred, and then took your finger off the delivery end of the hose, the siphon would flow. The only thing that can be "broken" in this kit, unless the hose or bulb is stopped up or has a hole or tear in the side wall somewhere (something you would likely see) is for the one-way valve in the bulb to be malfunctioning. You can test the valve by simply squeezing the bulb and feeling to see if it is blowing air on one side and creating suction on the other. This only tests to see if the valve is completely broken. It could be functioning somewhat, but not well enough to effectively draw the liquid into the hose. Before assuming that you have a defective valve, look at the directional arrow on the bulb and make sure you have it oriented in the right direction (arrow pointed in the direction that you want the liquid to flow). Of course you need to make sure that the end of the siphon tube that goes into the liquid being transferred is actually in the liquid and remains in the liquid throughout the siphon. If you are able to see the liquid being transferred, and observe air bubbles rising from the hose in the liquid when you squeeze the bulb, then you have the bulb on backwards. There are only two ways the bulb can go on the hose, so if you don't read directions and can't figure out the arrow on the bulb, just try turning it around the other way if it isn't drawing fluid into the hose. Since it is always possible that the one-way valve was installed backwards in your bulb, you should try reversing the direction of the bulb, ignoring the direction of the arrow, if all else has failed, before concluding that the product is defective. If the hose is properly submerged in the liquid being transferred, the one-way valve in the bulb is oriented in the right direction, and there is no blockage or tear in the hose or bulb, and you still cannot draw liquid into the hose, then you probably do have a bad one-way valve in the bulb.2) If the user is pumping the bulb to deliver the liquid, then he (not she, women read directions) did not bother to even glance at the instructions that direct, and even illustrate, that you should pinch off the hose where the liquid nears the bulb with the supplied clip, and then REMOVE the bulb. Opening the clip, while keeping the liquid in the delivery end below the level of the liquid being transferred, then allows the siphon to flow. The bulb is designed to pull a vacuum in the hose by pumping AIR out of the hose, not to pump liquids. A siphon is, typically, a low pressure phenomenon, and though the siphon should flow through the one-way valve in the bulb, its presence, if left on the hose, will, to some extent, impede the flow of the siphon. More important, because some air is likely to remain in the bulb if it is left on the hose and liquid is pumped through it, the siphon may quickly break if it is ever even established. It is a shame that some potential buyers of this product might be put off from purchasing it because of reviewers who didn't bother to read graphic instructions that a child could follow. One caution: the unfortunate statement in the lead description saying that the bulb "fits most hoses," apparently has led some to think this means "garden hoses." It does not. The reference is to common sizes of plastic and rubber tubing. This is made clearer in the more detailed description of the product, but the misleading phrase should be changed to say "most common plastic and rubber tubing." Siphon "hose" is the term most regularly used in association with siphons, probably because of the all-too-common practice of using a short piece of garden hose to siphon gasoline from gas tanks.

Works as described. I gave it only 4 stars because the printed instructions need work -- "when the liquid reaches the pump, detach the pump and release the white clamp" -- this is the first reference the white clamp. There is no previous indication of installing the clamp, and the instruction pictures don't show it. However, you can simply pull the pump out of the hose and the liquid will flow into the destination receptacle. There is also some kind of blue clip included in the package, but there is no explanation of what it's for. There is also a brass coupling, which I assume is for connecting an additional length of hose if you need it --- but again there is not reference to it in the instructions. There is a much more thorough explanation with better pictures and explanation on this product's page on Amazon.

I bought this to drain my motorcycle gas tank. It's winter so I haven't actually used it yet. The hose length is good as I have to push enough of it into the tank to reach the far back low corner. The bulb seems to be of high quality rubber that should last a long time. I tried the valves by using my thumb to plug off one and then the other end. It works perfectly, good positive valve action. I thought the mesh bag would be a waste, but it is actually very handy to store the whole mess in a small space.

Works for me!

I bought this siphon pump to transfer gasoline from my truck to a 5-gallon can that I use to fill my lawn equipment. It is a little messy to use but performs well and moves a surprising amount of liquid in a short time. I am pleased with it so far.UPDATE - It worked once, but not the second time I tried to use it. The bulb would not produce any suction. I threw it in the trash and would NOT recommend this product.

Buy a hose with a pump that actually pumps not siphons.

I should have bought the actual pump be to pump it into the vessel. The siphon bulb kept popping off making a mess.

Just ok

The hose is too thick walled. I tried using this to fill the batteries in my golf car. The plastic pinch off clamp kinda worked but took too long to stop the water. I can't stop it by squeezing it with my fingers. I know I'm not using it as intended but supplying an adapter and a smaller plastic hose that can plug into bigger hose would provide more versatility.

Best money I've spent in a while

Best money I've spent in a while. Makes draining the water off of my boat cover a breeze, so much easier than using buckets. Simple design and so easy to operate. If you own a boat or have anything stored that collects water from rain....you need this product.

Unlike my last siphon, this one works. It is a bit of a nuisance in that you attach the bulb to create the necessary suction but then have to remove the bulb to let the liquid flow. Inevitably, some liquid will spill. Not too pleasant, since I use this to empty gas from a snowthrower and generator.
