The hole is almost 1/8 inch wide, with the black plastic straw, the entire width is 1/8 inch.

You can but they turn into a wet noodle when they are hot. Look at all the complaints about this product.

what is the diameter of the straw? is it 4mm outer edge to outer edge?

The outer edge is 3 mm. You can sip through it easily. They are short, especially when you have tall mugs. I ordered 7 1/4 " black sip straws #1525BK7. They come in a box of 1000.

What are these made from? are they bpa free?

plastic, I don't know if they are BPA free.
