Solid 6.5" speaker from Polk punches down low
It's true - Polk has upped their game the past few years with better tuning of their speakers and the MXT-20 is no different. I was able to get these for a very good price, the build quality is pretty decent as speakers have generally been built better for several years now. Great bass, down to 38Hz although this can become un-refined a bit at higher volume. Very responsive to EQ, the bass can get thick on certain recordings but is not muddy. The tweeter plays a bit on the tame side, these are definitely not bright with my amps. They are rated up to 200 watts so they can get pretty loud The grills are nice, not magnetic but the fabric is a pleasant tweed. The light-colored driver is a magnet for being touched with the grills off. Really good job by Polk, the MXT / Signature Elite / Reserve lines are all impressive and have replaced the previous models considerably. If these boxes can be placed 24"- 30" on stands with on-axis the sound is very focused at moderate/high volume. They are much better than I expected and work better with high power amps like other Polk speakers I've owned. The price varies but are often on sale, hard to find better value for a speaker this good.

A long journey for a loud(er) house
So I am not an audiophile. I do like good sounding music though. And I am of the age that I remember simply epic amplifiers, speakers and stereos in just about everybody's houses. In my own house in the 80s and 90s, you could crank the music so loud and it would nearly deafen you, and that's with what my mom had bought at the local electronics store. Fast forward to today and we have nothing of that caliber. The soundbar is the closest thing to a home stereo system. AI assistants pump out OK sounding endless shuffles, vaguely in the direction you are feeling. So I made it my job to change that. I bought a decent turntable, a troubling amount of vinyl and an ... ok all-in-one amp+speaker system. I'm not going to name it, but it was lackluster to say the least. It got me yearning for that literal blast from the past. The boom of bass and that wall of sound. Did I find it in my XT20s? Yeah I did. It rocks. First, these things can get loud, good news there. They have larger woofers, 6.5" and they make noise. No, these aren't 12" subs on the floor like the old days, but on the other hand, they are lighter and look pretty cool. Setting it up? Well, pretty easy to attach speaker wire, but the road to here was long. You need an amp and preamp, turntable, these speakers. But my music sounds good again though; the house thumps. I put on music for the family like the old days. I'm very happy with the purchase. For those audiophiles who don't love just the "feels". I did do a lot of youtube research to find the best bang for the buck. I know there's other good brands out there, but let's just agree that this is one of them too. It's also super easy to find a sale and the are delivered quickly. I love the look and they make nice sounding noise. Easy recommend.

PC can be improved
Really love these. Very natural sound, not bright like some higher end polk. Using mostly on PC. I downloaded an app from the Microsoft store call FX sound. Boy they really came to life. Before I wasn't super impressed. Went from sounding too flat to lively. Like BW vs color TV. I have experience with equilizers, The fx sound app seems to be doing more than just treble and bass. Best speakers I've ever owned and the fact that I caught them on a good sale. On my Xbox series X, sounds really great, no additional sound processing on my end, not sure why PC was so incredibly flat. But Very happy

Decent speakers. Not great speakers.
Got these on a great sale price otherwise would give 3 stars. Have a pair of Polk monitor 4’s from 1989. Still love those speakers. Thought these would be similar. Yep, they’re not. Decent base, but lacks highs and mids are muddy. Not sure I’ve ever found this with other speakers - but these sound better louder. The build quality also is not great. They look decent from a distance but close inspection equals poor joins and seems. The grill covers are flimsy. Sort of the story with this entry price point these days. I also recently purchased a pair of klipsch with same size woofer but with their horn loaded tweeter. At list price they and the Polk are pretty close. If they’d been same price I’d paid I would be retuning the polls. The polks have ended up in my workshop and the klipsh in my office. Maybe that helps describe the difference. Loud and muddy in the shop. Bright and bassy in the office!!

Impressive sound as expected from Polk
As expected from Polk, these speakers have a very nice sound from bottom to the top. Great for a small to midsize room. I paired them to a class D amp and was surprised how good they sound with a little tweaking of the equalizer.

Simply a game changer stream XM from my iPhone
Decided to get out my old school 1970's receive, add a Bluetooth interface and some quality sounding speakers to take me back to my Wonder Years. Now I'm streaming Sirius XM from my iPhone 17 to an Auris bluMe Pro via BT-5.3 in AAC 24bit @ 44. 1KHz (can do 32bit with the proper Andriod phone) into my vintage 1970's SONY STR-VX3 receiver, going out to these Polk Monitor XT20's (and my existing Advent Calypso patio speakers with the A/B switch). What can I say? SImply AWESOME! Definitely big value for your buck.

Excelent
I had some Polk Audio R150 speakers, and I bought the XT20, and the difference is noticeable, especially in the bass. I also feel that they have more presence and tone. The space where I have them still isn’t soundproofed, but I notice that because of the bass, my room resonates more compared to the R150. But I really like them.

Great if tuned, still decent stock.
Mine were tuned with Dirac (and I'd recommend you get a receiver that supports it too), so I can't comment much on the stock sound quality, but they're great tuned. Lots of range in the sound, good value, and they look alright. I just wish they had some sort of (cheap) mounting system from the manufacturer.

Sehr gute Low Buget Lautsprecher

Excellent Quality For The Price.
These Polk XT20 Speakers were purchased to replace a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 12.0s, which, while excellent, were found to be quite fatiguing over extended listening periods. The Polks also had a superior frequency response range, 38hz - 40,000hz vs 70hz - 20,000hz, for the Wharfedales, which should, on paper at least, give a much more pronounced bass response. In terms of build quality, the Polks were very well-finished (the fine-textured overall black cabinet finishing, a pleasing and modern looking alternative to the common 'black ash' vinyl wraps which adorn so many entry-level bookshelf speakers). The Polks did not have as solid a cabinet as the Wharfedales (an indication of thicker MDF construction and superior internal bracing). The Polks binding posts are also not as high quality as the Wharfedale's, which also boasts twin sets of terminals on each speaker for 'bi-amping'. In terms of performance, however, the Polks were exceptional for what is a budget price. Clear and crisp high treble without being overly bright (with only a slight trace of high-end roll-off) and punchy, tight bass at medium to high volumes with no obvious signs of audible distortion. As with most speakers in this price range, lower volumes did lack a little definition. Only the mid-range performance was slightly subdued, in what was an overall fine attempt at creating a convincing soundstage. Being Rear-Ported, correct placement is also essential to contributing to a balanced soundstage. When tested with a Cambridge Audio Axa35 Amplifier (8 ohm) and Axc25 CD Player, the speakers were easier to drive than their 87db sensitivity suggested, and would undoubtedly be more so with a more powerful integrated amplifier than the Cambridge. The Polks also responded extremely well to EQ, and are actually, by default, quite neutral, so can be 'tuned' quite effectively through Tone Control. For this reviewer, the bass response - while excellent for a budget bookshelf speaker - is certainly not as powerful as other reviews seem to suggest, and a subwoofer would certainly enhance lower frequency response. However, most pleasing of all, is the XT20s ability to provide consistent non-fatiguing listening for extended periods. This was evident through a diverse range of different genres from electronic EDM to Hard Rock, and is, perhaps, the speaker's greatest attribute in an entry-level speaker marketplace where listening fatigue is often cited as the reason why individuals upgrade to the next mid-price level. Overall, an aesthetically pleasing, well-made budget speaker with surprising acoustic performance and sonic dynamics throughout. For the extremely competitive price of £189, you can't really go wrong.
